In today's Washington Post (online) there is an article on the top 25 TV shows that conservatives watch and the top 25 that liberals watch...

Very interesting... Check it out, Jack...

One show that conservatives watch that I love is "American Pickers" but then again I am a "recovering" collector (lol) so I know alot about junk... As well as real antiques...

The article is not about judging rednecks. I didn't judge any rednecks. And if you had read the article you would be well aware that, from the articles perspective, rednecks did not build this country, though some contributed.

I read the article and it is nasty and condescending. Are we supposed to look down upon them (oh I guess that was what NPR was pointing the way to) for watching TV on logging, fixing up houses, dancing? I don't get the point. mg

BTW, being an ol' "gear-head" I like watching the collector car auctions...

And I've been a fan of Larry-the-cable-guy going back to when he was making a living calling in various radio shows in the late 90s... Of course, he was getting paid to do so but I thought the guy was funny... Still do...

The point of the article is that the writer feels that the shows paint the South in a bad light. I don't really agree because there are shows based in the south that show people other than self described rednecks.

Auction Kings (Discovery)
The Woodwrights shop pbs
Real housewives of Atlanta etc

I get maybe 200 channels. I don't have to watch stuff I don't like. There ARE nights that pickings are skimpy, but there are often odd, silly gems that surprise me.

Being old enuf to remember 2 channels ...that signed off at 10PM, I am glad to have choices, even if many of them are stupid and shallow.

Sorry, JtS... I thought your "Reinforces our descision not to have cable" was about rednecks... maybe it was about TV shows with rednecks... maybe it was about TV shows showing rednecks in a bad light... maybe it was about showing rednecks in a good light.

Since I had so many choices, I obviously got confused about why you care what's on TV seein as how you don't watch much TV. Of course, maybe you watch TV all the time but not cable TV. More choices. I give up.

It is not a nice word, self described or not. You know how people used to sort of make fun of Newfoundlanders, although I think that was not too pervasive...this is much worse..it is hateful. They are fellow Americans, however described, North, South, Central, Greenland, Puerto Rico, whatever. How do the children feel hearing their fathers called "rednecks?" Knowing that because of their poverty perhaps they will be called the same..perhaps by NPR. That gives people license to ridicule them further, because I think many people..oh certainly not here..take their marching orders from NPR. NPR says ridicule, then we get to ridicule whatever group is not protected.

Well..the time has come, and 100,000 of us have signed a pledge..not to bully. Calling people names is bullying. That is one of the main names called. Watch the Home Improvement on hulu or cable or wherever where the kids take signs with names they call people and have a little parade.

Do we want children to hear their parents made fun of? mg

Like Bruce Springsteen wrote, Bill, "57 channels and nothin' on"...

As for the term "redneck"??? Like I have said before, when rednecks quit promoting it like it was a "product" then folks will quit using the term...

Over a million people purchased big "Redneck" decals for their back windows last year... We have "Redneck Christmas"... We have movies and all kinds of TV shows that promote "redneck" as a ***brand***... No one is calling personally using the term in a derogatory term against another person... No one is going to go up to some kid and say, "Your dad is a redneck"...

Ridiculous argument, mg...

Disappointing 'Redneck' TV Shortchanges The American South

Skipper Bivens of Animal Planet's Hillbilly Handfishin'.
Oklahoma hand fisherman Skipper Bivins is obviously a man who enjoys his work.

Bivins is the star of Animal Planet's Hillbilly Handfishin', a so-called reality TV show that turns on a few handy stereotypes about rural, white working-class people from the South.

Let's call it, for lack of a better term, redneck TV. And you can find it well beyond Animal Planet. Over on A&E, American Hoggers centers on the Campbell Family and their business: hunting down feral hogs in Texas. Patriarch Jerry Dean Campbell seems cut from a Rooster Cogburn movie â€" an ex-Texas Ranger with a sidearm and battered cowboy hat, who will tell you he's been "hunting wild boar since the 1960s."

More than anything, these series feed an odd sort of racial stereotype. The subjects are hard-partying, not particularly intellectual and connected to the land in ways we Yankees can only guess. They're real-life descendants of the Dukes of Hazzard who wave around the rebel flag and embrace the term "redneck" as a badge of honor.

Which explains the titles for some of these shows: CMT's My Big Redneck Wedding and Redneck Riviera, a show gathering buzz as a southern-fried Jersey Shore.

I tried an online test for my location in the political spectrum a couple of years ago, and was taken off guard when it put me to the left of 90% of the country. But more of my TV watching is on the Repub list than on the Dem list. Maybe because a lot of my political bent comes from experiences in my 20s, but I'm still a kid who grew up on the farm.

Thanks for linking to that NPR piece Jack. It really grabbed my attention as I drove off to work this morning.

I haven't had a TV in more years than I can keep track of, but my son and I do watch some shows on Netflix and Hulu, and one show that we watched for a brief while was about Crocodile hunters in the Louisiana bayous, which allowed me to "get the drift."

Like you, I don't fully endorse the views of the commentator, but find his observations about stereotyping to be germaine and food-for-thought. The shows are careful to focus exclusively on marketing one particular stereotype.

I agree that "redneck" is an insult, but it's not an insult based in race, color, national origin, or anything else over which one has no control. It's an insult based on attitudes, values, and lifestyle. It's a lot easier to say "redneck" than to say "lowlife, bigoted, beer-guzzling, misogynistic, ignorant, undereducated, gun-worshiping, trailer trash asshole".

As to why anyone would voluntarily choose to apply the term to themselves, please see "ignorant" and "undereducated" above.

"I agree that "redneck" is an insult,"

To many people the word redneck is used as a source of pride. To them - it means that they are working people that use their hands and get their red necks by spending time in the sun. Yes - the word redneck can be used as an insult but please know that many rednecks embrace the word to describe themselves.

well, this would make me ashamed, or really angry..probably really angry..

"lowlife, bigoted, beer-guzzling, misogynistic, ignorant, undereducated, gun-worshiping, trailer trash asshole".

If someone has harmful behavior then call them out on it, regardless.

In Maine, they used to call certain unfortunates "rat people." Probably some of them might have called themselves "rat people" but it doesn't mean the rest of us should do it. I can (probably should not) call myself shanty Irish but I would prefer that others not. And what is called affectionately or even disrespectfully in a closed environment is different than what is published world-wide. mg

I think that if you look closely into why we feel free to insult our fellow Americans that you will find some "race and color" in the mix. Why were people, who could be the ancestors of some people called "rednecks", in the bayous and deepest hollers etc...? Some were driven. Some were of mixed race, either African American or Native American. Some were Melungeon and other people of unknown ancestry, but certainly not entirely Northern European..DNA tests are showing that Melungeons who claimed Turkish ancestry were right. Read up on their history and see how it could overlap with some "redneck" geography and even traits..that had survival value at the time of great discrimination. We don't need to continue the discrimination now..or do we? Must we still cast around for people to insult and feel superior to and get social permission to do so? Social permission is very interesting...as soon as we get the memo that it is not cool to insult Irish, or Jews, or lesbians, or coal miners, then we start looking around for someone that it is socially permissible to be better than and let them know it. They had better be white male, so that limits the field quite a bit..but not white males like "us" or our family members. It is best if they talk funny, wear funny clothes, eat funny food, listen to corny music, etc. mg

Ah hem,

The original rednecks were miners who stood up to the Pinkerton goons hired by the mine owners to put down strikes with bullets.
The name redneck came from bandanas they wore. Later other hard working folks like farmers who labored under the sun were also called rednecks.

I bet most of us occasionally cross the political aisle regarding the shows mentioned above... but the 700 Club? I think that polled too high probably out of a religious guilt trip like maybe Aunt Gertrude thought, "I should say I watch watch it the most..." But then again if people have invested heavily with donations they will want to see the results of their charity.

SPAw noted the Swamp people, men, loggers, etc shows. I never saw one about their womenz though. I'd watch Swamp Sluts!
It might be as interesting as Storage Wars which has a a strange and strong appeal to junk hunters, antique afficianados and hoarders alike. You see they open up an abbandoned storage unit and people bid on the contents with out being able to go inside or touch a thing... (caution may be habit forming)

Unless we are talking West Point, there is a fine line between armed Fundamentalist rednecks in need of the only work available anymore and the time honored Southern Christian military families. Down there that fine line gets snorted like a line of burnin meth.
So, iffn no one is gonna stereeotype rednecks today an dish sum dirt bettern than jus being ignorant misoginistic gun crazy trailer kings... Ahll sure give it a try:

"Ya can't hava good ol Christian Christmas without the local gun club havin a Santa you can pose with fur pictures, while holding yur new shotgun, rifle, AR 15s or "semi" automatic M-16. Rednecks today are purty durn smurt and well armed, when it comes to guns rocketry and even computerizin code to make new games.
Shit on a biskut, I saw a new redneck videeo game las Sunday where you cud shoot Gabby Giffords in the head and you cud hear her speech gettin funnier and funnier. Whata hoot. But the one to end all is the Congressional turkey shoot. Once you git all the democrat turkeys you go to a bonus round where you gotta git Barney, Pelosi and finally the HNIC himself. Course there's nothin bettern shooting real live ammo. There's this here creek in Tennesee where you can shoot anything you damn well want at this super gun club. Sheeit, they got stuff there bettern than what we light up sand niggars with in Stanistan."

Oh well if I even approach the actual language/humor commonly found in that slice of Americana, folks here would be so shocked as to write a strongly worded letter of complaint to their modertor, all cept spaw and Raparee that is.

Truth is most redneck offensive comments are designed to piss libs off and are not necessarily a statement of true belief, exactly like Newt does. The dangerous rednecks dress well and have their own group, website and own controling stock in private prisons.

I hate the way Americans have to politicize every damn thing. Believe it or not, folks, not eveything is reducible to politics. I'm not a redneck and lean towards liberal in my politics but I don't watch ANY of the shows listed above as liberal choices. Of the conservative choices, I have watched only "American Pickers." I don't see it as a political predilection.

Likewise, I bought a Prius because I want to save money on gas not because I'm a pantywaist, tree-hugging liberal. I resnt people who think they know me when they have never met me but would be offended as hell if you did that to them because they eat Quaker Oats and everybody knows only racist, fascist teabaggers eat Quaker Oats.

Stop connecting everything to politics. Politics does not play that big a role in my life and it shouldn't in yours.

Yep there is room in a life for lots of different joys and sorrows.

I know'd an old timey redneck by golly by the name of Woody Guthrie. You might know his boy?!
At least I spect Woody wouldn't mind none bein called a red neck.
I also know that politics played a purty darn big part in his nation. Althought it don;t sound like it most of his songs were political in one way or another. But dad gumit, politics arint nothin but another feller that still puts his trousers on one leg at a time.
Sometimes a good song will grow even in the heart of a guy or gal who never knew nothin bout folks who struggle after he made them penniless.

GUEST, I sure hope you go on feelin peacable about yur fellow man.
It don't mean that yur fellow man is gonna return the favor. The greedy ones in particular are known to do some pretty nasty things despite knowin better.

Getting as far as we have is partly a gift of our ancestors who made hard choices. There is no doubt we too have choices to make in these times when all the money in the world is even now being plundered in CDO, SWAPS and Hedge fund dervititive markets, all of which are secret.
There is an old union song that simplifies a serious decision a man has to make.

Which side are you on, tell me which side are you on?...

In some ways, stereotyping is in the eye of the beholder. The beholder may be the recipient, the projector, or some combination of both.

Stereotyping is problematic to the extent it is unconscious. It is a by-product from the way the human brain efficiently functions to categorize and make use of the huge amounts of data it takes in and processes. The capacity to categorize data is essential.   Cognitive distortions are inevitable. Lack of awareness that one's perspective may be distorted is not inevitable. Figuring out one's own garbage from the some one else's garbage, even when one is aware and conscious, is very challenging.

This has some interesting family history and genealogy. He mentions the Redbones, Redlegs (Irish slaves in Carribean, often bred with African slaves for various economic reasons); Mestee, Melungeon, various Native American and South American groups.

Another website I was just on talks about Roma Gypsy connection.

People in the SE corner of US had many challenges if they were of mixed race. They had to be secretive sometimes and isolated. To survive they had to do unpleasant or illegal things perhaps. They were denied education. It is a very complex history..but suffice it to say that the simple stories we have heard about settling of America, however defined, are just that...there were many more ethnic migrations than we know about or admit...DNA tests are going to reveal a lot. Read up on Cryptic Jews, Moors..all sorts of influences..and can anyone tell me with a straight face that some Appalachian music is Scots-Irish..does it sound Scottish? Does it sound Irish? Any sort of hybrid? Obviously it could have a lot of African American in it..but to me it sounds almost Arabic or mideastern. And the people ahve never looked (some of them) like Scots, Irish..any combination. Something huge went on in the melting pot there that is just now being discovered, researched etc...so we probably should be somewhat sensitive to their heritage, the healthy parts of their lifestyles, and if certain behaviors need to be changed, there are better ways of achieving that than by insults, ridicule, condescension etc. I think NPR should know better for one. mg
