17 Dec 11 - 03:38 PM (#3275569) Subject: Folklore: Autoharps/Reality Check From: saulgoldie OK, so I have these two nice Oscar Schmidt harps. One 15 and one 21. I really meant to learn the autoharp. But realistically speaking, I have enough with just the 6 & 12 string guitars. So, in the spirit of decluttering, I thought I would find "good homes" for them. Should I do the QBids or eBay thing? Should I consign them to Elderly? Or should I shamelessly try to sell them right here? Or...does someone want to try to persuade me to see the "error of my ways" and to keep them? I have a 15 bar Oscar which spends most of its time in the box while I play several other instruments, but it's always there when I need it for something special and it hardly ever goes out of tune. You don't have to be an expert to make it sound good. It helps if you have a group/session where they play in one of your keys, so you can just quietly strum along until you find you've mastered your harp. If you play guitar, then you already understand chords and keys which makes it much easier. Then you can venture out a bit and go solo with confidence. Don't sell. Robyn |

I was once asked to do the music for a pantomime, and the opening number was "Do You Believe in Magic" by Loving Spoonful. To get the right sound for the intro chords, I played around with string gauges, different pickups, plectrum thickness and amp settings for weeks. I ended up by converting a Hofner 175 (one of the red vinyl covered, strat-shaped, ones) just to play that song. I'd nearly got it right when I happened to see a video of the band playing that song.
