03 Nov 11 - 08:02 PM (#3250025) Subject: In Memoriam From: Joe Offer It was suggested that we should have one thread that gives tribute to Mudcatters and other musicians who have died, dedicating one message per person to honor people who have made a contribution to music, especially folk music and the folk community. Each message would include links to other threads about that person. Seems to me somebody started a thread like that quite some time ago. Can anybody find it for me? Thanks. -Joe-

21 Dec 11 - 11:04 AM (#3277721) Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Every so often Mudcat hosts an obit thread. Always these celebrate the life of some-one who is sadly missed and it is often poignant to read the tributes posted. But life rolls on. This is shown clearly by the inexorable way that the obit thread moves down the listings until it finally takes residence in the Mudcat archive. Sometimes it will be refreshed. Sometimes it lies forgotten by all but the original poster. That has always struck me as sad. A while ago now the idea of a Mudcat Roll of Honour was suggested. Many Mudcatters felt this was a good idea and so…. here it is (with a name change as suggested by Bonnie Shaljean). Bradfordian has personally dedicated the new Mudcat CD set (This is Us) to all our dear departed Mudcatters. I would ask you to be patient as names are added. I would also like your help to fill out the list! However, be aware of the very few guidance notes! …..This thread is for those people associated with the world of folk music in its widest sense. …..The people on the thread must have had an obit thread running on Mudcat. …..We only go back 24 years to 1996. If anyone else would like to start a thread for those many and wonderful people who shared their talents with us before then, then I'm sure that will be appreciated! Any post on this thread should only be a name and a link to their obit thread please. If you want to discuss or add anything else, please use the thread running at http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=141258 Many thanks, Peter |

01 Jul 20 - 08:02 PM (#4062379) Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: rich-joy Pete, I think Colin Dryden (1943-1988), whose songs and life have been under discussion on Mudcat quite regularly, has maybe missed out on an OBIT!! Though he was born in, and died in, Bradford, Yorkshire, most of his singing/performing was done in Australia. Though I met him and regularly saw him perform, I didn't know him well and I'm not sure that I'd be the best one to write his Obituary for Mudcat!! However, his niece has written of him on 30July2013 and also the late Dermott Ryder of him and his music (published on on 17March2020) and both are posted here : https://naomidryden-smith.tumblr.com/ What do you think can be done?? Rich-Joy |
01 Jul 20 - 08:50 PM (#4062387) Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: GUEST,keberoxu You know, Rich-Joy, if Mr. Dryden died in 1988, then his death and obituary preceded the existence of Mudcat in the first place. I mean, how long has Mudcat been around? 35 years, maybe less? So it has sense that he would have no Obit thread at the time he died in a forum that did not yet exist! Having said that, maybe a Colin Dryden appreciation thread would be appropriate? |
01 Jul 20 - 11:19 PM (#4062402) Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: rich-joy That's True, Keb! I'd forgotten that small point, haha!! I guess coz he was one of those characters where his death had been "presumed" a number of times in Australia (alcohol/drugs loomed large, I think, alongside his genius), that Oz Folkies stopped believing he might have actually gone. I know my partner and I were surprised when quite some years later, Colin's earlier death back in England, was finally and absolutely confirmed! So yes, perhaps an Appreciation Thread may be the way to go?? ......... R-J |

Do look at the Youtube links for Chris. It is always hard when people we know reach the ends of their lives. In Ashling's case her life was brought to a close far sooner than it should have been by the actions of an attacker. Here's hoping the police are successful in finding the person responsible. RIP |
21 Jan 22 - 09:45 AM (#4133147) Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete John Durrant, Nick Havell and Hana Horka have been added to the roll today. 28 Apr 22 - 10:48 AM (#4140437) Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Tattie Bogle No, I am one and the same Trish Santer, alive and kicking, aka Tattie Bogle, living in Edinburgh Scotland, both a Mudcatter and active on thesession.org. I've never been too secretive about my Mudcat nom de plume, so when I joined thesession.org, I just used my real name. I think maybe what happened is that, as Tattie Bogle, I supplied a list of names of Scottish musician friends who had not been mentioned on the In Memoriam thread, then must have signed it with my own name - which has then been included in the list of the sadly departed!! I'm definitely still here! So maybe you could remove my name from that list? (See post on 8th January 2012.) I checked on Facebook and there is a Trish Santer Helms in New York, but I don't know her, and don't think she's a Mudcatter. Keep up the good work, Pete Waddon! |
28 Apr 22 - 11:26 AM (#4140442) Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete Thanks for clarifying that Tattie. I have now deleted your name from the database. Your explanation sounds convincing! Thanks for the heads up! All the best, Pete |

04 Jan 23 - 11:48 AM (#4161265) Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Waddon Pete I have added to people to the roll today, Austin John Marshall and Kevin Mitchell. Close in name but not in style although both were great exponents of their craft. Sadly I missed Austin back in 2013 so didn't include him then, but have rectified that error now. As his obituary says, he was pivotal in the folk revival of the 60's and 70's and was married to Shirley Collins at one time. He is also well known as the author of the poignant song, "Dancing at Whitsun". His style was mainly contemporary whereas Kevin Mitchell was a fine traditional singer with many superb songs in his repertoire. Both will be missed. |

Gabby wasn't well known, but would have sung at sessions/song circles, sometimes solo and sometimes with her husband and/or children. Husband Jim McFarland is well-known in Irish and British traditional singing circles. I see there are some Mudcat threads announcing dates he was performing in folk clubs in England; in 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2018. I've heard him once on zoom since Gabby's demise. |

16 Jan 23 - 11:49 AM (#4162663) Subject: RE: In Memoriam From: Felipa although Johnny Doyle doesn't have an obit thread, Pete, I did copy his obituary into the Music of Sliabh Luachra thread https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=155350 on 14 Jan 2023. While looking for the information, I also came across a more general article about Sliabh Luachra music which mentioned Johnny, so I added that as well. The obituary is above that article. Alf Mac Lochlainn (Ireland 1926-2018) is missing from the list. He is commemorated on the same thread as his son, Colm (1951-2022) who did make the list. I went to an Andy Irvine gig a couple of months ago, and one of the songs Andy sung was Alf's "My Son in Amerikay".
