Subject: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012

Delighted to announce that we will be presenting 3 workshops, independent of Celtic Connections in 2012.

22/1 -- A special event in memory of the late Ray Fisher, led by her long-time friend Sara Grey, who has extensive knowledge of American balladry. Prices are £7/4 conc.

29/1 -- An exploration of English variants of the Child ballads by Brian Peters, a musician with many years of experience and considerable enthusiasm for these songs. (Prices are £6/4 conc.)

5/2   -- The Irish dimension is unfolded thanks to Kevin Mitchell -- born in NI, but with strong influences from Co. Donegal. And we also welcome the special involvement of Pat McNulty - the first person to introduce the Uillean pipes to Glasgow. (Prices are £6/4 conc.)

All workshops have to be booked in advance because numbers are limited, so please click onto the link below to express your interest -- and there will be a grand discount for those booking all three events.

That seems a bit strange. Pat's father and grandfather played, and he got his first set of pipes from a Glasgow maker (Willie Hamilton) who was also a player and who had been taught by Pat's grandfather.

Apologies for the "shorthand" intro. to Pat and his pipes -- what I really meant was that it was Pat's playing that brought the pipes to wider attention than the piping fraternity, causing much amazement at the intricate fingering and the layered sounds.

Advance bookings are looking good -- especially as people are generally unwilling to look beyond Hogmanay!

Tattie Bogle, you'll be more than welcome on the 5th!

Numbers are very encouraging, and there seems to be a genuine appreciation of the very special (and different) talents of our three guests -- Sara has a deep connection to the great variety of US ballad versions, and a real knowledge of many of the most important traditional singers; Brian has immense musical taste and a deep background of textual study which informs the fine ballad versions that he presents; and Kevin has a finely-tuned ear for the most attractive texts from the tradition, which he then transforms into performances that are entirely his own.
