23 Dec 11 - 07:27 PM (#3279132) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: GUEST "Pat McNulty - the first person to introduce the Uillean pipes to Glasgow. " That seems a bit strange. Pat's father and grandfather played, and he got his first set of pipes from a Glasgow maker (Willie Hamilton) who was also a player and who had been taught by Pat's grandfather. |
24 Dec 11 - 06:56 AM (#3279290) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Anne Neilson Apologies for the "shorthand" intro. to Pat and his pipes -- what I really meant was that it was Pat's playing that brought the pipes to wider attention than the piping fraternity, causing much amazement at the intricate fingering and the layered sounds. Hope we might see you there on that day, Guest. |
24 Dec 11 - 07:09 AM (#3279294) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Tattie Bogle Hope to be there for the first one, Ekanne. An even more direct link to the Ballad workshop page and booking details is here: http://www.lauriesacousticmusicbar.co.uk/ballad_workshop.htm |
29 Dec 11 - 05:05 PM (#3281680) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Anne Neilson Advance bookings are looking good -- especially as people are generally unwilling to look beyond Hogmanay! But, expecting that New Year's resolutions will propel people to be organised, I'd encourage those of you who might be thinking that our programme is interesting to signal their willingness to participate by signing up, using the handy clicky link above (provided by Tattie Bogle). Hoping to see some Mudcatters in Jan//Feb. |
01 Jan 12 - 09:36 AM (#3282944) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Anne Neilson Two bookings in already this morning -- really impressed by those alert enough to have remembered their New Year resolutions, and have acted upon them! |
05 Jan 12 - 01:17 PM (#3285338) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Tattie Bogle Hope I can also come on the 5th Feb now! (I had only booked for the first one). |
05 Jan 12 - 03:39 PM (#3285400) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Anne Neilson Tattie Bogle, you'll be more than welcome on the 5th! Numbers are very encouraging, and there seems to be a genuine appreciation of the very special (and different) talents of our three guests -- Sara has a deep connection to the great variety of US ballad versions, and a real knowledge of many of the most important traditional singers; Brian has immense musical taste and a deep background of textual study which informs the fine ballad versions that he presents; and Kevin has a finely-tuned ear for the most attractive texts from the tradition, which he then transforms into performances that are entirely his own. Any other 'Catters coming? |
06 Jan 12 - 03:24 AM (#3285689) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Valmai Goodyear These sound tremendous - I wish it wasn't so far away. Valmai (Lewes) |
06 Jan 12 - 04:26 PM (#3286156) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Anne Neilson Sorry we can't tempt you up here, Valmai -- but, of course, it's the same regret in reverse when we read your Lewes workshops programme! |
09 Jan 12 - 04:54 PM (#3287724) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Anne Neilson Continuing good response to advance booking. And Valmai's sent me off in pursuit of a wee idea, which I intend to pursue with a few other interested parties -- so I may well be back (on another thread!). |
14 Jan 12 - 01:25 PM (#3290612) Subject: RE: Glasgow Ballad Workshops -- 2012 From: Anne Neilson Heading for capacity for the first of our three events -- so book now to avoid the disappointment of not hearing Sara! And advance bookings for Brian's day and Kevin's workshop are filling up too (we breed discerning audiences in Glasgow). |
