Severn in hospital 26 Dec 2011

26 Dec 11 - 12:22 PM (#3280164)
Subject: Severn in hospital
From: GUEST,rumanci

I thought Mudcatters would like to know and wish him better.
Information via his Facebook friends give the following details:

"...our- dear friend Severn Savage has once again landed in the hospital. Friday night he went to the ER complaining of chest pains and general malaise only to discover he had an inexplicable build-up of fluid around his heart... They then gave him a free helicopter ride to Baltimore. I visited him tonight and found him weak but in good spirits, due in no small part to the return of basketball to television. He'd like visitors (rm. 626 in the Weinberg Section of the UMBC Hospital, the one near Camden Yards) and can be reached at 443-462-4770 in his room. Cell phones don't seem to work in the building. Please call or visit to cheer him up- Christmas in the Hospital has gotta suck. Am going back tomorrow and will report any news here, but please give him a buzz or stop by." Please y'all, give Severn a call or a visit if you're able."

Love and gentle hugs
rum

That sucks. He was having such fun in the Tavern. Anyone have an address for the hospital? Hopefully, he won't be there long enough for cards to arrive. I have his home address around here somewhere.
Be well, Sev.

I spoke with Severn about a half hour ago. His humour ain't improved; he told me two bad puns in fifteen seconds. It's a sickness he's lived with for years--the bad puns that is.

He was sounding good but not great. However, he's out of the ICU and the docs will run more tests to determine the cause. The doctors do not think the fluid is blood, so that's a positive.

"Thank you very much and I can't get to a computer for awhnile. I had a very good last-minute Christmas thing for the Tavern but I did not get to print it, but it may see the light of day some day. I've been going through some bad times and a lot of different kinds of pains. I had an MRI today and will find out more about things i can tell you tomorrow.

"Nothin's been able to beat me down yet! There's a whole lot of life in my heart still."

Goddamn that man. When I walked into his room, he looked at me and said "I'm cured". Then maybe, it could have been a pre-emptive strike against the treatment I was offering.

I wanted to find out just what was happening in there, and tried give him an autopsy – they wouldn't let me for some reason and said it's a dying practise. Then I offered to assist Sev in becoming an organ donor, and told him there was a good deal going for early contributions. For some reason, he wasn't co-operative (operative being the requirement here).

Then I offered to give him a total vasectomy, it could be very good for his heart, and stop the risk of those heartus interruptus moments. But he treated me like a persona non gratuitous and what could I do?

I bound him up real tight, enough bandages for an Egyptian mummy, because I wanted to keep the germs out (you know what those hospital rooms are like – swimming with streptococchi) and it's neat when you do the vaccum thing on the heart fluid. I had my vaccum cleaner and knife ready and was just about to give it a go when the meal tray came in – what a lot of baloney. So I scraped it into a bag and whizzed out real quick – Sev doesn't need to eat right now, and I just thought, that careless pyromaniac could make a real ash of things if I don't keep him tied up and out of trouble. The soup was stale and it was hard to tell what origin the mush was, but, hey, a free meal's better than none. I'll be back tomorrow Sev, just around meal time. In the meantime, don't remove the drip, it's keeping your organs warm for the transplant.

Bye for now
N.R.

Subject: RE: Severn in hospital 26 Dec 2011
From: Stilly River Sage

I picked up the new smart phone this evening and gave Severn a call. I won't transcribe the conversation or the puns that drifted through it, but there were many and various. I winced several times through conversation - in the first few minutes as we spoke, as he was apparently coming out of a "twilight" medication from a procedure, he was still tossing puns around.

The first night in the ICU was awful because a woman in there (apparently demented) kept screaming "Help me! Help me! Save me!" and occasionally "Thank you, Jesus!" in a way that was very unsettling. He was glad to be out of there, as the medical staff apparently were ignoring her and anyone in ICU had to listen to it.

He said had an MRI yesterday and "they found a mass around and in my heart (and I'm not even Catholic)." They don't know what it is, and while he wonders if it is a lymphoma or sarcoma, I reminded him that it might also not be one of those, it might be benign. One must always keep that as an option! He was told they would give him results tomorrow.

He described a procedure they did, taking a vein from the groin and snaking it up to the heart to increase blood supply, and apparently at the same time they took samples of the mass. I commented that it sounded like the team included a plumber. He said that luckily they didn't use any Drano.

He wants people to know some good news - that his daughter brought him a Kindle, so he's going to play with that to find some books to read while he's there, and he expects to be there for several days.

To the secret santa folks, he didn't have an opportunity to open the gift sent to him. He was at the local hospital on xmas eve, and they flew him to the Baltimore hospital without stopping at his house to get that gift.

This is a summary of an hour's conversation, and for anyone tempted to feel instant alarm as two cancer survivors discuss the possibility of a couple of types of cancer now, you have to understand that cancer (the Big C) is survivable, and those of us who have been through it before know better than to fly off the handle at the possibility of such a prognosis. Severn was speculating in a general sense, but no rubber will hit the road until he knows what the doctors think and he and others can research what the options are.

After all, it could be that the giant squid (from the Mudcat Tavern) has managed to snake in an arm (heaven knows how - through an orifice?) and give his heart a squeeze. I know a lot of Mudcatters will want to give Severn a virtual squeeze (or at least a hug) and that phone number that Bruce posted earlier is a direct line to his room.

Severn, I hope another day has brought you closer to having answers to this latest medical mystery. And I hope the nurses up some candles on a birthday cake for you.

Whether or not Garg has Aspergers is not the issue. A reference to Aspergers and that post in the same paragraph makes an assumption about people WITH Aspergers and that is a non-starter, imo.

You're right, 999. There's no excuse for Garg, just wondering at his mix of good wishes and socially inept placement of what's on his mind. On-the-fly diagnoses are bound to miss their mark.

So Sev had access to a computer briefly in the wee hours. Perhaps he's like my teenager and sleeping all day and up all night?

Hi:

Severn asked me to post this update. Much of it resembles what his sister Emily posted, but in his words:

"I have small cell cancer cells, same as before. in a mass in and around my heart. I am receiving chemo treatments but will probably be out of the hospital by Tuesday. There will be three weeks between one chemo therapy and the next. I am in the best of hands at this hospital. it is the first one I know that has a firm grasp on how to feed a diabetic. I have moderate and intermittent pain. But I've done this routine before.

Thanks for your love and support. You've been an important part of my life and it's great to hear about all the support I'm getting.

My phone at the hospital is 443 462-4642

Address, at least till Tuesday, is:

Severn Savage
University of Maryland Medical Center
10th floor Room 68
10 West Medical IMC
22 South Greene Street

I've just had a chat to Severn, he's chirpy and good humoured as always, despite the bad news and the treatments (chemo). He's had a happy birthday call from Canada, Micca called him from the UK, me from Australia. He's hooked up to a bunch of tubes and he thinks all the equipment in there's making it hard for him to access the internet. a second attack of cancer is tough to deal with but Severn is taking it with style. He's pretty sure the chemo will get rid of it again, and he's pleased with the standards at the hospital.

I saw Severn this afternoon and he was as warm and funny as ever. he was moving about. he says the chemo should not be really bothersome for the first couple of months. he loves knowing that so many mudcatters are beaming their support to him by phone, mail, this forum and others, or vicariously through friends.

Here is the latest post from his good friend and frequent musical partner, Phil Fox.

"Severn is now in the Oncology section of the hospital, transferred from the cardio section. He has an 8cm by 11 cm tumor wrapped around his heart. It is a recurrence of the cancer he had before. The good news is that the doctors are relatively certain they can chemically dissolve the tumor and get it off of his heart. The touchy part is what the chemo does- can his kidneys handle the waste from both the chemo and the tumor itself? And what damage has been done to the muscle wall of his heart? The first round of chemo will finish Tuesday, he may be home by the end of the week. In the mean time, he's in rm 10 West 68 at the same hospital (room direct 443-462-4642). Call him and say hello. Also, in all my years, I've never seen prayer hurt anything."

Severn entered my life about five years ago through Mudcat. His humour and personality were (and are) wonderful. He is one seriously strong individual. He's fought this cancer before and won. He dealt with and still deals with the results of some bad burns. He still has a sense of humour. I love the guy despite never having met him. I'm kinda counting on him not giving up, and he has a great medical team working hard for him. I seldom pray, but now and then I make exceptions, and for him I do.

Thanks for all the good words and thoughts. They have cheered and made me feel worthwhile at a time when I've needed to. I've done this drill before and know better this time how to handle it. Of course, it wasn't around the heart last time, but I have a strong heart that's been through a lot in its time and can handle anything life wants to throw at it.

I've been through my first bad chemo day (They'll increase as time goes along) and have made it to two open mics and a swimming pool walk. I have made it to errands and have been paying bills, cleaning up and doing all the other things that pile up when one is taken off the map for 11 days, and I still have lots of people to celebrate Christmas with. Somehow, I missed Christmas Eve, Christmas, my birthday, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day at a time in life when I don't have a Postal Service job to get in the way any more.

I'll start up a new Recovery ward thread soon, so that those of us with medical complaints can both use it as a bulletin board for truthful accounts that now we'll have to tell a greatly reduced number of times and as a creative writing forum continuing our tales of our long-running hospital staff of good and bad docs, and whatever new ones we create. We can put both news and fun on the same thread with laughs and shared information, once again, to help with our cures ant our friend's understanding.

Good to hear from you, Severn. What a beautiful, indomitable, positive outlook. May it be so and may you come through free of all concerns and here for a long time to come.

All the best,

kat

1. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent.

2. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."

3. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted.

4. A dyslexic man walked into a bra.

5. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm, and says: "A beer please, and one for the road."

6. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: "Does this taste funny to you?"

7. "Doc, I can't stop singing The Green, Green Grass of Home."
"That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome."
"Is it common?"
"Well, It's Not Unusual."

8. Two cows are standing next to each other in a field. Daisy says to Dolly, "I was artificially inseminated this morning."
"I don't believe you," says Dolly.
"It's true; no bull!" exclaims Daisy.

9. An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at either.

10. Deja Moo: The feeling that you've heard this bull before.

11. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day, but I couldn't find any.

12. A duck walks into a drug store and asks the druggist for a tube of chapstick. The druggist asks "will that be cash?" The duck says "No, just put it on my Bill" !

13. I went to a seafood disco last week...And pulled a mussel.

14. What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.

15. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says, "Dam!"

16. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Not surprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

17. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel, and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office, and asked them to disperse. "But why," they asked, as they moved off.
"Because," he said. "I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer."

18. A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt , and is named 'Ahmal.' The other goes to a family in Spain ; they name him 'Juan.' Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

19. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him (oh, man, this is so bad, it's good)...A super-calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

20. A dwarf, who was a mystic, escaped from jail. The call went out that there was a small medium at large.

21. And finally, there was the person who sent twenty different puns to his friends, with the hope that at least ten of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.

Yeah, it was an email. I forwarded it to Sev but I thought I'd post it here for filler.

Gnu has struck just about the right tone - laughter is the best medicine! That groan from Rap's quip isn't too bad, either.

Just had the time to read your post, gnu.

Had me smiling. Then grinning, and #19 resulted in such guffaws that my son came running to see what was up.

I love bad jokes and cornpun!

Hey... I just copied and pasted so's I could freeresh the thread. And, that's because I think as much of Sev as the rest a youse do. Maybe more than some but I can't see how that is possible. A true gentleman and generous to a fault. One more Sev would make this (my) world a better place. Alas, there is only ONE Sev and he had damn well get well sonner than later. No pressure mind you, Sev. Take it one step at a time... I would prefer BIG steps, of course.

We've been chatting on facebook. When he goes in for treatments they last for three days, so unless he stays at the hospital he has to commute back and forth. Sounds like he's looking forward to the Mudcat Recovery Ward - someone head over and air the sheets and blankets, will you?

He has a Kindle Fire, so maybe he can get a WiFi connection and keep up with us during those long IV periods.

I had a chat to Severn midday today (last night, his time). as usual, he's remarkably chirpy and busy for a man with small cell cancer. Talking to Sev, you'd think nothing was wrong, he's remarkably positive, and still going out to sessions etc. The chemo's wiping him out a bit here and there - some very kind friends have made meals for him, which has been a great help. He seems to be getting around and managing things pretty well, tho he's still waiting for further tests (after the next round of chemo) to better understand what's happening.

In the olden days of knights and serfs, a notorious punster had been making remarks about the king. The punster was dragged before the king and told that it would have to stop or he would be hanged by the neck until dead. The punster said it would stop because "No noose is good noose." There endeth the tale.

Maybe to avoid confusion, it would be a good idea to close this thread and refer people to the new one.
