They don't make it exactly clear that your email IS your "Apple I.D." which gave me a few bad moments, I seem to recall, seeing as how I'd given them my credit card number (which you have to do). |

All they included in the box was a brief "getting started" brochure and a much more robust one with the phone company plan for using the thing. According to one of the battery manufacturers, Li batteries nearly always are shipped discharged and disconnected internally. The battery "connection" is done automatically, within the battery the first time you charge it, and cannot be turned back off. Normal recommendation for Li batteries of the size I would expect is at least 16 hours before turning anything on for the first time. Since there have been numerous complaoints about the iPad being a "battery hog," anything less than full charge might present problems with getting set up. John |

From: GUEST,Lady Policeman I bought mine from an Apple store and they set it up for me there and then so it must have been ready charged as I saw the very helpful assistant unpack it new from the sealed box. Got it home and couldn't connect to my WiFi but then realised I had to key in the Wireless key number which is a number on a sticky label under my wireless router (I'm with BT). Since then it's been great. I've even found a free Folk Radio app!!There are free lessons at most Apple stores which teach you the basics in groups of about 6 then you can return for another more advanced lesson later when you've had a play with it.You can book these lessons online at the Apple site. In UK if you want a 3G SIM card on a monthly basis they are £5 from the shop but I think you pay £10 if you renew online. I bought 2 cards and then put them in when I need them, only used two since August as I've managed most of the time to find WiFi. Happy iPadding I think they're great! |

From: Brian May Well Bonzo, I'm glad you're happy with Windows 7 - actually, had that come in preference to Vista, there'd be fewer Apple Macs out there. I switched when Vista was the only alternative and they (Microsoft) announced that they weren't going to support XP further (they've gone back twice on that so far). We still use XP in the major aerospace company I work with. Macs ARE expensive, but they do what they say on the can, I've had this MacBook Pro for 4 years and I'm not even looking at a replacement. I never owned a Windows laptop without getting really frustrated with it (within months), and a glitchy operating system that kept asking me stupid questions at every hands turn. Major Apple software upgrades cost about £25 or so and are not disabled unless you pay a fortune to have the software capability turned back on. If your Mac has the hardware fitted (model dependent), then it'll work and furthermore, there are fewer incompatibilities (I haven't had one) with existing software/hardware. So enjoy Windows, (7 is good and reliable), most of us who have switched to Mac, will never switch back to Windows - I think that speaks for itself. Hardware is expensive, software isn't - and it works. I really hope the iPad is sorted, it's a lovely bit of kit (yes it's also expensive) which works really well and I'm sure she'll adore it. From: Bettynh Apple seems to believe that their machines are so incredibly cool that they don't need any explanations. With my first Apple, I looked at the mouse and it seemed that the cord should go under my hand, rather than stick out in front. No instructions, of course. So I learned to use it that way, moving the cursor right by moving the mouse left, etc. This was 1988, there was no one I knew that could tell me otherwise. Then I loaded a paint program to play with and quickly ran into "Fatal Error 911." Good grief! Killed the thing in less than an hour! No paperwork to explain, of course. So I turned it off (that's what you do with an Apple II, no rebooting to be had) and when I turned it back on, it worked fine. I've had Macs ever since, and there's never instructions. Apple official websites are still spectacularly unhelpful (they'll try to sell you something). But the online communities that discuss problems will have an answer if you run into trouble, and some of their solutions are pretty great. People have been writing little add-on programs for Macs (and Apples) for 25 years now. This whole app thing seems to be a way for the company to make money from them, and I can't comment on it. The Itunes program works well, and you don't have to buy from them (but do nose around the podcasts - lots of cool free stuff there). I'd love an ipad someday (soon, I hope). Have fun with yours. |

I have had macs at home for 10 years plus - Windows at work so I know both and wouldn't have a windows in the house - anyway a mac will run a windows emulator if you really insist or even run windows on a partitioned hard drive I have always found the Mac to be pretty intuitive so I must declare I always use it first and then use manuals after and never found any general programmes ant trouble to work through. There are exceptions like Photoshop/Cubase where you do need a little guidance. The Mac progs like garageband have easy start/set up so great to use. Enjoy |

You just need to understand that manuals are only for use in the case of dire emergencies. Bonzo, Stay cool. You may not like it but language has a nasty habit of changing whether you like it or not and does so very rapidly when a technology is evolving as fast as is computing. I am trying to understand exactly what a Widget is in smart phone terms. I have some on my new Android phone, I know what they do and they seem to be a bit like apps (sorry, f***ing applications) but I'm not sure why they are called widgets. |
