30 Dec 11 - 06:27 AM (#3281848) Subject: BS: Happy 10th Birthday the Euro. From: GUEST,Bluesman Hard to believe it's ten years since the Euro was introdiced. Just three years ago, the euro was being praised as the can-do currency that had delivered unprecedented prosperity in Europe. Now, it's widely derided as a hugely flawed experiment in the wake of a debt crisis that's threatening its very existence — an uncomfortable backdrop as the currency's notes and coins hit their first decade in circulation on Jan. 1. The question is: Will it get to its 11th birthday, let alone 20th? In the euro's tumultuous short history, it has already been heralded as the ultimate mark of a peaceful, united Europe; scoffed at as a giant act of hubris by a distant political elite; and credited with giving Europe a more influential voice in the world. Retaining Sterling was a good move for Britain. |

30 Dec 11 - 07:02 AM (#3281863) Subject: RE: BS: Happy 10th Birthday the Euro. From: John MacKenzie I heard an interesting analysis of the Euro, on my radio the other day. It effectively has different values in different countries. So to Germany it is cheap, and they are doing well, whereas to Greece it is expensive, and too rich for their economy. The 'One size fits all' ethos/ideal, of the Euro, never has, and never will work. When the countries involved are so economically disparate. When a packet of cigarettes, or a bottle of beer are the same price in all the countries involved, and the wages are the same. Then, and only then, will a common currency work |

30 Dec 11 - 07:32 AM (#3281886) Subject: RE: BS: Happy 10th Birthday the Euro. From: Richard Bridge Oh dear me. I have agreed recently with Bozo, and with Mither, and now I have to agree with White Man (at least in part). At the time the Euro was born I opposed the UK joining it for reasons close to those Giok puts in kitchen economics terms. A unified currency precluded differing fiscal or monetary policies (inflationary or deflationary) in different geographical areas. And lo! the attempt not to unify fiscal and monetary policy has led to impossible internal strains. But now we have another problem. If the Euro is not robust enough then financial crises will envelop one country after another and whether the UK is in the Euro or no it will suffer as the nearest major consumer markets erode. That is the reason Camermoron's little Englander politicking has made a crisis for theEuro and therefore UK more, not less, likely. |
