Folk in RI and vacinity

Calling Mudcatters in Southern MA, CT and RI.
This is on behalf of a friend in Newport RI who is looking for Folk events etc within reach of Newport.
We know about the Newport FF (anyone doesn't?), and are wondering about the rest of the year.

There's the Common Fence music in Portsmouth,Peep Toad in Foster, The Stone Soup in Pawtucket, and an excellent festival in New Bedford, Ma. on fourth of July weekend. Perhaps people a bit more familiar with the r.i. scene can be of assistance. P.S.. I believe Newport has an Irish festival in the summer.

Yes, I was in the Royal Infirmary one Christmas. It wasn't as bad as you'd think. TF.

John Roberts (Anglo here on the 'Cat) and I will be in New Bedford on Feb 4 at the Wamsutta Club (scroll down the page for details) and we'll also be at the Woods Hole Folk Music Society on Feb. 12.

New Bedford, MA, also has the Working Waterfront Festival in the early fall. The Blackstone River Theatre (another folk venue) in Cumberland, RI, hosts a Summer Solstice Festival in late June. Mystic, CT is a little more than an hour away from Newport, and Mystic Seaport is holding its annual Chantey Blast (or Chantey Sing) this Saturday from 1-5 and its Sea Music Festival June 7-10. The weekend before Labor Day there's the Folk and Ethnic Heritage Festival at the Slater Mill site in Pawtucket, RI.

there are a couple sessions around, at the fastnet and at aidan's pub, but they are more amplified performances than sing-arounds. does anyone know of a song circle in the area? I'm looking to go to one

see you at Mystic tomorrow

Mary

Oh, Mary, I wish I knew you! I should be at Mystic if my car functions. Look for a woman who brings her own folding lawn chair.

More thoughts: Lily Pads at the UU church in Peace Dale (So. Kingstown) has occasional concerts. Also, WRIU 90.3 FM (University of RI) has weeknight folk programs, 6-9 PM. My favorite nights are Kingston Coffeehouse (Tuesdays) and Celtic Realm (Wednesdays). I don't know of a regular song circle. You might try to connect with the Rhode Island Songwriters Association if you are a singer-songwriter. If not, let me know and I will look around to see if I can find something else for you.

Also, there's the Church Street Coffeehouse in Warren and the Stone Church Coffeehouse in Bristol, I think.
