There's a caps lock on my laptop
And then when I type an A
Little finger hits the button
And my message goes all askew
There's a capital, there's a lower case
And last there's a lady who
Hit's her caps lock with her finger
Just as many of us do.

(Thank you Malvina.)

Break a leg, Deb. Them's lucky folks in South Portland, Maine.

Say 'hi' to Deb for us!

I'm listening to Debra Cowan's 'The Long Grey Line' as I'm typing this. Has that gal got a voice. From cut to cut she just keeps delivering. It's a beautiful CD. What a wonderful talent and phenomenal vocal artist. Note perfect, evocative interpretations and, well, after this CD I'm going to listen to 'Fond Desire Farewell.' That makes me one very happy camper. Thank you, Deb, very much.

Bruce you are so very welcome. I checked my PO Box yesterday and your parcel wasn't there. probably got delivered today ;-)

Looking forward to hearing you as well, Bruce and thanks for the "teasers".

And also looking forward to seeing the S. Portalnd gang on 1/22 at TrueBrit's.

It'll be a fine cap to a great weekend.

Right now, I'm looking forward to being a little inert for a couple days, but then I'll be looking forward to doing something and being around other humans again.

Deb's concerts are ALWAYS wonderful!

Well, I've had the pleasure of listening to Debra Cowan's CD, 'Fond Desire Farewell'. I don't understand why her voice hasn't lost any quality over time, why it keeps getting better with each listen. This fine singer AND interpreter of songs is wonderful. It's clear that she loves the material she does and the accompaniment is superb. Bravo, Deb.

I seldom go all la-la over singers from the 'trad' vein, but Cowan demands respect because she's so darned good. I've listened closely to five of her CDs so far--well, just two CDs--but each time I find nuances I missed in the last hearing, so it's like a new CD each listen. She could teach a nightingale the finer points of vocal work, and for that alone she deserves all the serious musical attention she deservedly receives. In a word, brilliant.

Deb sometimes appears with John Roberts. The two of them play off of each other and obviously enjoy their performances as much as their audience. Looking forward to hearing Deb again.

Not sure if I'll have any oomph left: annual meeting for our church at noon, then a Farmers' Market meeting at 3:00.

That said, we'll see if we can roust ourselves. Deb's music and good company always make for a fine evening!

Very small audience (TRUBRIT, Tom, Kendall and me) thoroughly enjoyed a lovely evening with Deb, who came up with new songs and some great anecdotes. A lovely evening for all of us. We even got Kendall doing some stuff, which was a treat.

To all you who never showed, you remind me of a quote from Henry the 5th:

And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day. (W.Shakespeare,)

Fie on the lot of you!

Kendall, most of us who posted about not being able to make it already feel bad enough without the guilt trip. I would have loved to have gone last night, however the fact that I need to be able to make it to work in order to keep a roof over my head, and be well-enough rested that I will not be a danger to myself and my co-workers does play a huge role in how I spend my evenings during my work week. I was out like a light shortly after 7:00 PM and woke up at 9:00 PM, long enough for Jason to to shove food at me, then nodded off several times in the next hour or so before I crashed for the night. I would not have been a very attentive concert goer, and I fear my snoring might have been a distraction for both Deb and the rest of you.

Agreed. I feel terrible for having missed it, and I feel worse for Deb. Trust me, she is one of my favorite singers and a great person and I HATED not being there!

I thought my one self wouldn't make too much of a difference. Last night was the first one in a week where I didn't wake up with a nerve going haywire, and the headache finally left, but last night, a 150 mile round trip wasn't something that I felt I could do.

I trust that Deb understands about those of us who were, sadly, unable to join you. Fortunately I had not made a commitment since I knew I could not indulge.

Since I am not a gentleman, am not in England, am only rarely in bed, have no manhood, nor have battled upon St Crispin's Day, I reckon Kendall must be distracting us with the "Delights of Shakespeare on a Dreary Winter's Eve", Act 1. In Act II we'll be visited by the "Spirits of Good Humours and the Effervescence of Summer's Kindness".

Equally, I do not blame those who have have not been able to come here despite having promised or hoped or conjectured. We have lives and must lead them.

From: DebC

Maybe, Elmore, I'll be singing somewhere close to you so you won't have to travel far. To all the others who couldn't make it: no worries. Stuff happens and I don't expect folks to come out if they aren't feeling well or would much rather stay at home.

I had a lovely evening with Jacqui, Kendall, Tom and Deborah and I had a chance to hear J & K do some of their songs and poems. I'll certainly be back in S. Portland and perhaps it'll be a better time for all.

Deb

Hey you folks, we knew that a Sunday evening concert was the worst possible day to do it, so, don't feel too bad. We still love you.
Actually, all I wanted to say, in a most convoluted way, was that you must feel bad for being unable to attend.

"To thine own self, be true." (The Bard)
My bad. Am I forgiven?

mg, sorry you don't approve. I can't imaging why anyone in this century would consider that quote sacred.

Subject: RE: Deb Cowan House Concert 1/22 Maine

As I surmised- Kendall has now introduced Act 2:

"...you must feel bad for being able to attend." As an act of lovingkindness, we shall assume the word "not" is hovering invisibly between "for" and "being".

Love,

m

It's not an easy job running house concerts as we well know. Just finding a time for scheduling one is a challenge. Last weekend for us involved the Sidedoor Coffeehouse on Friday (regularly scheduled on the 3rd Fridays) and the Press Room sea music session on Saturday (regularly scheduled on the 3rd Saturdays). We spent a quiet Sunday recording and editing some back-up guitar tracks for my soon to be released 5th CD. No energy left for going out.

Hardly anything is going on this weekend. Guess I'll update my Quicken file from last April. What fun!

Well Deb Ron , Martin and I sang to an audience of two about a month ago, an open mike night had been cancelled unbeknown to us and two others had also turned up, we asked the landlord if they didn't mind us singing, which we did, and were joined, half way through the evening, by a church choir! I would like to say it was only the once but there were two dutch couples once made up an audience but that was ages ago!

Thanks, Pete. I have had a few gigs where no one turned up, I sang anyway and it wasn't fun. The sad thing was that in that instance, my instincts told me this wasn't going to be a good situation and sure enough, it wasn't. Had more to do with the person booking the gig than anything else; they didn't really care about the gig.

OTOH, I have had others (like Sunday night) where the turn out was poor and I had a blast!

It's really about the music and the people involved.

I started my performance in a pub in Scotland and the 4 people who were there got up and left! No one but the bar tender. I always wondered where I was going to die, and while I was pondering that, suddenly, the doors opened and about 30 Scots came in. They were outside waiting for the English couples to leave!
We went on until 2 am.

Gordon Tyrrall and I once played in an Irish Bar in Leipzing, shortly after a local financial scandal had resulted in no-one getting paid for a major building project, and all the Irish contingent who'd been employed on the job having gone home.

We played to two people - and they had a fight with each other.

There used to be a bar/restaurant/cinema called The Orson Welles in Cambridge Ma. One Sunday Sunday afternoon they booked Louis Killen. My wife and I were the audience. We called up some people who lived nearby, but had no luck. Still, Louis did the show as if there were a full house. I booked a couple of house concerts on Tuesday nights where the audience barely reached double figures. No Tuesday house concerts!
