I don't remember seeing anything on stage that gripped me as much as this, it was truly superb. But I can't actually say I remember any music! |

Here's the Amazon page, with it labelled "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available." But, you can purchase mp3 files of it all at Amazon (UK). (£7.49 for the lot, or £0.89 a track. There are 23 tracks.) There's also a "Making of" DVD available from the National Theatre. Kind of suprising they aren't selling the cd. Maybe they just did a short printing run and it didn't sell well enough to print more?? I did see on one blog post about the play in New York that they had the cd for sale. Tuba player Jim Self reported in May 2011: "For John Williams I [sic] recently finished recording for the film War Horse. Like most of Spielberg's films, it was entertaining enough at the time but one feels slightly manipulated at the end of it. Richard Curtis didn't help - I can't abide anything he's written since 'Blackadder'. I wonder what country Curtis sets all his scripts in? It looks jolly pleasant, wherever it is. At least Huge Grunt wasn't in it. |

For Speilberg to have overlooked them [songs] for the film is to my mind an error of judgement. The book is an easy read as one would expect from a gifted author. I would have been anticipating the songs of Tams in the film but must reserve judgement on what Williams has come up with.I may not even go and I seldom go anyway I still think Speilberg will have missed a trick, maybe he needs a line from Ricky G to bring him round. perhaps when the remake comes out in 20 years time the songs will be included. |

Did get my hands on the book recently, so noticed the many changes there. Mike went to the film grudgingly, but afterwards decided that the film was done well on its own merits. I'm always a sucker for a good horse story... even one set in war, since I believe Spielberg makes some of the best anti-war films. The carnage of war has included as many equines ( draft & light horses along with mules) as it has humans - soldiers & civilians. The only visual he missed was a shot of the horses wearing gas masks - which were actually in use as gas warfare escalated. As the young men marched off to war, Dancing at Whitsun kept coming to mind. I hope a soundtrack of both the play & film come out. I also wish that folks would figure out that there's better ways to resolve differences that blowing each other up. |

Although we soaked the hankies we brought, it wasn't as emotionally bad as I thought it would be. More just tear-jerking. It's Spielberg, after all. I kept thinking, "those guys in the trenches are way too clean." It's adapted from a children's book, and feels like it, rather than being as bitingly lifelike and gore-filled as could be possible given the material. (Mike Yates, I think I'm with your conclusions, entirely.) So, horsey people, I would actually recommend it. Definitely lovely Devon scenery. Regarding the music, there was only one song that I was conscious of, that came as the first volunteers (and the horses) march out of the village. I believe this is John Tams' song, "The Red and the Blue". We stayed to the end of the credits, and I think there were three songs/tunes credited to people other than John Williams; one definitely was Tams. The credits were going too fast for me to catch the other names. It kind of annoys me that the movie website doesn't have the full credits, and that imdb.com, which includes some "uncredited" crew members, does not include these, either. ~ Becky in Tucson |
