Has anyone seen this yet? We are seeing it today, the music is apparently by John Williams so very different from the National Theatre production.

Anyone who listened to Mike Hardings folk show on Wednesday will be aware of John Tams work on the songs which cement (I think) the film together and is it Tim Van Eykin or have I lost the plot already, singing?

Magnificent film. Powerful imagery, beautiful music, well told story. It is one of those tales where you know exactly where it is going, and you are happy to go along.

I presumed the recordings of Tim on the Mike Harding show were from the soundtrack CD of the stage play.

Was John's music in the film - I don't think he mentioned the film in the interview but may have missed it. I hope it is!

The IMDB listing of credits doesn't mention either Tams or van Eyken, and the movie soundtrack album is just all John Williams originals. Too bad. I'll be curious to hear whether he makes use of any themes/sounds based in traditional music, but I'm not optimistic.

The film was excellent, and if the soundtrack had the voice of either John Tams or Tim van Eyken, it would have been even better.

I had thought that at least one of John Tams's songs were in the film... there is the story (reported in the London Evening Standard a few weeks ago) that John queried a sequence in which methodist chapel music was being used for a parish church sequence. And Spielberg looked at him and said, "Do you want your f*****g song in the film or not?"

Saw the film with my wife today and can agree that it was a very good film but was disappointed to find that none of John's songs made it into the film.

Spielberg obviously won!

how can you do a stage version of a story that has galloping horses?

They use life-sized puppets of horses, each one worked by several puppeteers. These 'horses' can even support a rider. It's uncanny how they 'become' real and one disregards those manipulating the puppets.

I followed the play so closely, I'm surprised anyone missed the answer to your question, open mike. But outside the UK and New York theater scene or the horsey world, I guess it's possible. :-) Amazing puppetry is the answer.

I saw the stage play in London and was absolutely amazed. The puppetry was so good one really imagined real horses. I don't remember seeing anything on stage that gripped me as much as this, it was truly superb. But I can't actually say I remember any music!

There is/was a cd of the musical score from the play. Here's the Amazon page, with it labelled "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available." But, you can purchase mp3 files of it all at Amazon (UK). (£7.49 for the lot, or £0.89 a track. There are 23 tracks.)

There's also a "Making of" DVD available from the National Theatre. Kind of suprising they aren't selling the cd. Maybe they just did a short printing run and it didn't sell well enough to print more?? I did see on one blog post about the play in New York that they had the cd for sale.

Here's a Lincoln Center Theater (NY) article about Kate Pfaffl, one of the singers in the New York production.

From the Wikipedia page about the movie:

The film score by John Williams was recorded in late March and early April 2011. Tuba player Jim Self reported in May 2011: "For John Williams I [sic] recently finished recording for the film War Horse. It's a war movie so the score has a lot of brass—but it was gentile [sic] music often." English folk singer John Tams, who wrote the songs for the stage production of War Horse, was approached by Spielberg and Williams about including one of his songs from the stageshow in the film. In the liner notes to the film soundtrack cd, Spielberg wrote "I feel that John [Williams] has made a special gift to me of this music, which was inspired not only by my film but also by many of the picturesque settings of the poet William Wordsworth, whose vivid descriptions of the British landscape inspired much of what you are going to hear." In the premiere of three of the tracks on New York radio station WQXR's "Movies on the Radio", broadcaster David Garland drew parallels with the work of British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.

From the footnotes to the John Tams reference there,

From West End to Hollywood as John's songs woo Spielberg (www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk)

John Tams at Cropredy on Steven Spielberg and Richard Curtis (Emma Hartley's Glamour Cave blog)

So there was buzz during the production, but apparently none of it panned out. Oh, well. An entirely separate production, but it's a pity English folk doesn't get deemed good enough for primetime.

"Castle Combe's high street is filled with ducks and theatrical mud and assistants touching up make-up in front of mullioned windows (no double-glazing here). Spielberg is shooting the scene where the men of the village are being waved off to war, and 200 or so extras are marching through the streets carrying suitcases and singing the haunting refrain of 'Only remembered for what we have done'."

Does this appear in the film? I'm hoping to see it this week.

I took my daughter to see 'Saving Private Dobbin' at the weekend. Like most of Spielberg's films, it was entertaining enough at the time but one feels slightly manipulated at the end of it. Richard Curtis didn't help - I can't abide anything he's written since 'Blackadder'. I wonder what country Curtis sets all his scripts in? It looks jolly pleasant, wherever it is. At least Huge Grunt wasn't in it.

The songman in the London theatre production was brilliant and set the scene, time and place.

For Speilberg to have overlooked them [songs] for the film is to my mind an error of judgement.

The book is an easy read as one would expect from a gifted author.

I would have been anticipating the songs of Tams in the film but must reserve judgement on what Williams has come up with.I may not even go and I seldom go anyway

I still think Speilberg will have missed a trick, maybe he needs a line from Ricky G to bring him round. perhaps when the remake comes out in 20 years time the songs will be included.

There were so many points in the film which would have benefited from the singing voice of either John Tams or Tim van Eyken - but only these in my view.

finally got to see the movie this weekend... the play is not likely to show up in western NY any time soon. Did get my hands on the book recently, so noticed the many changes there.

Mike went to the film grudgingly, but afterwards decided that the film was done well on its own merits.
I'm always a sucker for a good horse story... even one set in war, since I believe Spielberg makes some of the best anti-war films.

The carnage of war has included as many equines ( draft & light horses along with mules) as it has humans - soldiers & civilians. The only visual he missed was a shot of the horses wearing gas masks - which were actually in use as gas warfare escalated.

As the young men marched off to war, Dancing at Whitsun kept coming to mind.

I hope a soundtrack of both the play & film come out. I also wish that folks would figure out that there's better ways to resolve differences that blowing each other up.

John Williams will be 80 on 8 February 2012.

From Wikipedia

"John Towner Williams (born February 8, 1932) is an American composer, conductor, and pianist. In a career spanning almost six decades, he has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in the history of motion pictures, including the Star Wars saga, Jaws, Superman, the Indiana Jones films, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Hook, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Home Alone and the first three Harry Potter films. He has had a long association with director Steven Spielberg, composing the music for all but two of Spielberg's major feature films."

He can add The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse to this list. The Adventures of Tintin has just won an Annie Award in the Music for a Feature category. War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin have both been nominated for the 84th Academy Awards in the Original Score category, John Williams' 46th and 47th nominations for the Academy Awards.

Son and I saw the movie on Sunday. Although we soaked the hankies we brought, it wasn't as emotionally bad as I thought it would be. More just tear-jerking. It's Spielberg, after all. I kept thinking, "those guys in the trenches are way too clean." It's adapted from a children's book, and feels like it, rather than being as bitingly lifelike and gore-filled as could be possible given the material. (Mike Yates, I think I'm with your conclusions, entirely.) So, horsey people, I would actually recommend it.

Definitely lovely Devon scenery.

Regarding the music, there was only one song that I was conscious of, that came as the first volunteers (and the horses) march out of the village. I believe this is John Tams' song, "The Red and the Blue". We stayed to the end of the credits, and I think there were three songs/tunes credited to people other than John Williams; one definitely was Tams. The credits were going too fast for me to catch the other names.

It kind of annoys me that the movie website doesn't have the full credits, and that imdb.com, which includes some "uncredited" crew members, does not include these, either.

It was a children's story originally.
