Jonathan Holden, whom I knew as the organizer of the eclectic "Rhythm & Roots" concert series in Tucson, Arizona, died on Tuesday, January 17, of a cerebral aneurysm while hospitalized for pneumonia. He was 60.

Jonathan Holden, a longtime Tucson concert promoter and tireless champion of Americana and roots music, died on Tuesday. He was 60.

Holden, who had been hospitalized with pnuemonia since last Friday, suffered a pulmonary aneurysm and died at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital, said family friend Cathy Casper.

Holden leaves behind his wife, Susan Quinn Holden; and two sons, Gabe and Devon, both of Tucson.

Since 1998, Holden has been hosting concerts through his Rhythm & Roots series at Plaza Palomino and other small venues. He also brought shows to Flagstaff. The concerts he produced throughout the years included everything from old-timey country and roots rock, to Latin jazz and flamenco.

News of Holden's death spread quickly on Facebook Tuesday afternoon. Tonight, a note was posted on Rhythm & Roots website: "Mr. Jonathan Holden Passed Away Today, January 17th, 2012. Shows for now, will go on."

On Sunday, singer-songwriter John McCutcheon will perform at Suite 147 in Plaza Palomino. That concert, and others in the Rhythm & Roots series, will go on as scheduled, Casper said.

Casper said private services will be held later this week and a memorial celebration of his life will be held in February.

Mary Katherine, on the first link (the Rhythm & Roots site) there's a place to leave condolences. It's plugged into their e-mail list registration system, so you have to give your e-mail address as well, but you don't have to follow up with the message you'll receive in reply.

Thanks, Waddon Pete & Susan, I didn't know him well but for a reasonably long time, and and there were some periods when our paths crossed fairly often (especially when I was managing director for Tucson Friends of Traditional Music). His concert series has been the main one for "roots music" in Tucson for a number of years now, and his will be big shoes to fill for someone else, now, in that area.

I'm so sad for his family, as he has gone long before his time.

I was reading some old articles online and saw this thread...it is wonderful to know so many people enjoyed his concerts and that his work touched so many people. Remembering Jonathan...Dad, today, and forever.
