I note that the original message said that the song was "pre-war" -- it's a song written by concentration camp survivors in Nazi Germany. I guess it's "pre-war" in the sense that it was written in the earlier type of labour camp (from which people were indeed sometimes released) rather than the later death camps.

I used to know the German words ("Wir sind die Moorsoldaten..."), but I've forgotten them. I'm very partial to the Home Service recording of the song.

The song was recorded in German, as Die Moorsoldaten on the Songs of the Spanish Civil War LP (Folkways FH5436) where it was sung by Ernst Busch as part of 'Six Songs for Democracy'. There's a translation there. Alternatively, it was recorded by the Dubliners on The Very Best of..Vol 2. (c1973) and more recently by the Black Family (Mary,Shay and Co.) on Time For Touching Home (1989).

Also, it was talked about in another recent thread whose title, unfortunately, escapes me. What intrigues me is - in what way could this song be used in a film about Brendan Behan? I'd like to hear more, please! - Susanne
