Lyr Req: ? wartime music hall song

I was talking to a chap yesterday who said they had been looking for the words of a song his grandfather used to sing to him. It was about soldiers he thinks doing target practice and the 'punch line' was about a soldier being shot in the 'penny slot'. His grandfather must have been born around the end of the first world war, so I imagine it must have dated from then.
Does anyone have any ideas? I've asked Mark Dowding, who is a fount of music hall knowledge, but he is stumped.
Thank you
b

Interesting. Be patient. Someone will dig this one up.

Any other clues?

Cheerily,

Something to do with a gun beginning with /a/ not ack ack, and the rows of soldiers lining up firing...

Very kind of you to say that Barbara. Other people are the Fount - I just look things up that they've done the donkey work on. No luck with this one yet though!
