In his website ("A Folk Song a Week"--16) Andy Turner posts the live festival recording, most of which I get; luckily he prints the first verse (or reprints it, from the 19th-century "Good Christmas Box") because bits of succeeding verses fly by me, and I'd really like to have the whole thing. Here's the start: The man that lives must learn to die, Christ will no longer stay; Our time is short, death's near at hand To take our lives away. It goes on to such (not altogether unhappy!) thoughts as "we ne'er shall live to see old age"; anyway, give it a listen. You can also go to the CD and "preview" the song there. Not bad, but I bet you'll prefer Andy's festival recording (including the "liberties" he takes with the original). Thanks! |
