BS: Don't cross your legs - nerve damage

26 Jan 12 - 12:12 PM (#3296665)
Subject: BS: Don't cross your legs
From: gnu

After being zapped (I think they paid by the zap) with electrodes on the left arm and both legs and stuck and zapped with a pin in the right leg more times than I enjoyed, the neurologist determined several things. Re the peroneal nerve damage in my right leg, the told me not to cross my legs.

Such a simple thing, but I never heard of it.

Take warning! Do NOT cross your legs!

And don't use armrests... sit in the middle of the couch and stay out of the carpal tunnel.

Hmm. Well, that's interesting. I have noticed that animals don't cross their legs. Does it interfere with the nervous system's signals or is it a problem for the muscles or what? What's the problem with using armrests?

The treatment you received sounds sort of related to acupuncture, only the other way around (acupuncture needles allow a discharge of trapped electrical energy that has built up and been blocked in certain junctions in the body, kind of like releasing water that's been trapped behind an obstruction in a river...when the river flows properly the overall situation becomes healthy again...when it doesn't, the situation gets stagnant, and that results in illness, inflammation, etc.).

"I have noticed that animals don't cross their legs."

Both my dad's yellow labs have crossed their "legs" while lying down. :-)

As for arm rests, you shouldn't use them while typing because they don't allow you to keep your elbows and wrists at the proper angle and puts more pressure on your joints/carpal tunnel which opens you up for issues like carpal tunnel syndrome.

Don't know what it means exactly,'cept,he crosses his front paws, and

M... "Was that the extent of the neurologist's advice, gnu?"

A few other things, but all essentially the same... bending any joint past 90 degrees strecthes the nerves; also, pressure on any nerve, especially at a joint while the joint is bent over 90 (like resting your chin on your hand while your elbow is, say, resting on a table).

And, during the history, I could not believe he had never heard : " I had a pinched Satanic nerve... hurt like devil." I made that up but I just figured he would have heard it before. I thought they were all quackups. I wonder if he ever saw, "Doctor in the House".

And I've known a half dozen dogs that fequently crossed their legs for a specific rather rude purpose. So far as I know, none of them even went blind from doing it.

Yo... mod... if ya got time? Sorry I messed up.

Ya know what's odd? I REALLY wanna cross my legs. Almost did it many times since noon just inadvertently.

Mum told me that she had heard all her life (85) that crossing yer legs is bad for circulation. I wish she had mentioned it to me.

i rather like the horse who crosses his legs and leans against a building while Lee Marvin is preparing for the gunfight scene in "Cat Ballou". When teaching students how to present themselves in front of an audience, I often have to tell students not to cross their legs - because it transmits an appearance of weakness and/or indifference. At the moment my legs are crossed...

When our blood pressure is being taken the medical folks always urge us not to cross our legs.

How about if you are wearing a kilt?

One of the most useful things I do to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome in my wrists is switch hands using the mouse. That makes a big difference if I am doing a lot of photo editing. I'm not equally good with either hand.

And yes, Charlie, I use both hands on the mouse too. Not at the same time though.....

Holy moly! I just crossed my legs inadvertently and realized something. The peroneal palsy is not just in my right leg casused by crossing my legs... some of the problems in my left leg are caused by the same thing as well! Same nerve! Just a bit different application of force. Even tho it's right leg over left leg.

After learning about this "odd" thing today, I have become more "aware" of the feelings in my legs and feet. I crossed my legs out of habit and immediately felt a change in the right leg AND the left foot. What a revelation! And, I will add, it's a relief to KNOW what is going on... I have been tryin to find out for over two years... Canuck Health Care... two years... don't cross yer legs.

I am curious. How many of youse were taught by your elders never to cross yer legs?

We girls were always taught it was not "lady-like" to cross our legs, the ankles, yes, but not the legs. Of course, when we grew up a bit and put on high heels, tight skirts, etc. we figured out it could be rather sexy, but I still don't remember crossing mine, much.:-)

Oh, and I can verify...Jeri is absolutely right. I thought maybe it was a group hallucination, like ya'll ate some 'shrooms or something, but I canna see any evidence of Spaw scat anywhere.:-) Don't forget, besides needing two hands for HIS mouse, he'd need a tripod, too.

Right now, I am still a little pissed off that he was in front of me in the dick dispensing line when he was born and made a deal for nearly all the foreskin they had. I mean, WHY do you need a dick THAT big?

Oh, yeah, right, sorry.

In the 1950's only homosexuals crossed their legs in public, were seen reading poetry, or wore a wrist watch, or a white roll neck sweater with suede shoes. Talc and deoderant were pretty suspect as well - I can remember the girl at our local corner shop wondering to my Mum if her boyfriend was a little bit of a fanny for wearing aftershave.

In England that's how it was. harsh but fair.

That chump Spaw has his dick confused with his big ego. I knew a gorilla like that once. He ended up lying in a Chicago alley with about 100 bullet holes in him. After that it didn't matter how big his dick was any more, but all that lead made him so heavy that they hadda get a dozen other gorillas just to carry his damn coffin.

Now lemme getcha straight here, gnu. Are you sayin' that if a gal is sittin' on her barstool and she hoists her right leg up and lifts it fetchingly over her left knee and rests her right leg daintily on top of her left leg that it is bad for her??? (or left leg over right, whichever?) Cos it is constrictin' the nerves and blood flow?

Is that what you mean by crossin' the legs? If so, I am gonna hafta tell at least 800 women that I know about this, and I don't want to get it wrong, okay?

I am real concerned that women should not hurt their health. This world needs all the healthy women it can get as far as I'm concerned.

Notwithstanding the excellent advice (although I m led to believe it is from a cardiovascular aspect for many people) it does lead to an interesting question for another thread, all this advice from specialists;

At what stage does the profession move from fighting issues to finding things for the worried well to carry on seeing them?

I have been tasked in the past in comparing USA and UK health systems (from a corporate and funding rather than medical view) and the beginning of this thread rang a few bells, where individual advice can inadvertently become general.

As to crossing legs.. Both healthcare systems have to deal with teenage pregnancy. You might be onto something.....

One comes to expect Spaw to exaggerate/underestimate his manhood.

But who ever expected Kat to admit to "dainty tits". For the smaller versions I prefer the terms 'pert' or 'perky' or even (for those fans of old UK tv), 'pinky & perky'

'"dainty tits"'

There's a million dollar marketing possibility in that. Animal crackers made in the shape of birds, specifically the scores of tits around the world.

The second generation could be chocolate or coconut covered Dainty Tits sold as cookies.

The third generation could be Dainty Tit phones and hair combs combined like a Swiss Army Knife.

Son of a gun! I was doing just that when I read your post, leeneia.

Wow... talk about legs cramps in the middle of the night! The doc took over from the nurses when it was needle poking time on the right leg. Where he did most of it and the deepest three different depths, subsequently more painful) of it took me twenty minutes to limp it off. Owwww. And, no, pain usually doesn't bother me... well, it never did in the past.

Say, there's another interesting question.... does one's tolerance for pain lessen with age? If so, could it be that, when young, you simply think it will only be for a while and I'll recover soon?

BTW... sorry for the actual thread topic, John. I know you don't care for threads of a medical nature. I am NOT saying you are sqeamish because anyone who eats haggis has got true grit. Especially if there are any kidney stones in it. Ecccchhhhh!

To get away from some of the pain and get some more sleep, I slept in the late hours (4 to 6AM) on my right side with my left knee against my right leg just below my right knee for the past several nights. SOB! Shooting pain spasms right where the doc stuck a needle in my leg. Apparently, if you sleep on your side, you're supposed to put a pillow between your legs. This will also help prevent the recurrence of the Satanic nerve pain (hurts like the devil) I have been experiencing over the last two days.

Anything else that's simple and possibly common knowledge that I should know about?

Well here's a suggestion. Take 2 aspirin and a warm milky drink before you go to bed, and let me know how much better you feel in the morning.

I'm always a wee bit dubious about the pillow between the knees idea....that's fine if you stay in the one position all night, but who does? Don't we all move around in our sleep? It might start off between the knees then probably ends up around the feet.

Cheers

JennieG... better than having your spine out of whack. The pillow keeps your spine more straight. Recommended by docs and physioterrorists.

Two weeks and the strength I have regained is impressive. I am talkin near 50%! Even tho the muscle is still very flat at about 20% of ths size it should be. The foot fall (foot drop) is abating well at nearly 50%.

Crossing the legs is bad for circulation I was warned about that when I had my son. But then as soon as the nurse left the room I would cross them again (rebel me). I can't say that it has done anything in particular and didn't even get varicose veins.
