Outside Carnation WA USA not far from Seattle. I do want to collect canning/fish processing songs and will have my little digital recorder so please tell me if you have any. Likewise any potato famine songs. I am also putting on a workshop on songs of liberty/freedom. If people know of any, especially in Hebrew or Spanish, feel free to come and sing them. Also need someone who can sing the Marselleise in Francois. You don't want to hear me try. Also, we do try to have sessions at night sans book (bring your own for your own use if you want). I am not putting this on so I can't say what people can and can't do, but if you see a bunch of people singing late at night (I am only referring to late night stuff, not daytime stuff or official song circles in agenda) it would be good to assume that they are not using books because they are the sorts that really are not fond of the book experience. It is not because there is a book shortage. There are other groups who do like the book experience. I am hoping we can do what they did in B.C. which is just announce ahead of time which room prefers what and people follow suit. THis is not a minor issue; it is the reason I and I know others come to camps so we can go at full throttle, with all participating as singers in choruses, perhaps humming if they don't know the words etc. Not exclusive but a preferred style by many. mg |

We have been fairly honest on these boards how we feel but have failed to really tell people in person, which is a delicate subject and hurts their feelings..so we just fade away adn quit going to things. We just need to identify ourselves and excuse ourselves to alternate buildings and leave people who like the books to enjoy themselves..what happens though is they often find the music is better in the other rooms and start the process over with the books..then people look for other quarters to sing without the books and it goes on all night long. mg |

The opposite happens all the time, plus we get to hear how exclusive we are and how can they sing if they don't have the words in front of them (that is why God made us able to hum).. I would either accomodate to the group or I would leave to find a group more to my preference..remember that I do not have access to much music..a few times a year, as opposed to someone in Seattle could ifnd something any day of the week..so I have to make these time-consuming and expensive trips count and judge if they are worth my going to..more books late at night, less chance. More flourescent lights and no efforts to turn them off (because people can't read their blue books is a very big reason), less chance. mg |

26 Jan 12 - 11:17 PM (#3296980) Subject: RE: Rainycamp 2012 this weekend Jan 27 From: GUEST,mg It is so frustrating when you look around the room and see this core of people who you know could create incredible music, with the enjoyment and participation of other just ordinhary singers...no one has ever said shut up and let us sing all of the songs...(I don't include myself in the us as I sing mostly on choruses). It is expected that everyone will participate. LThe problem is do you go around in these endless circles..late at night...or do you defer to the people who are the best leaders. I defer. I want to hear the most and the best music that can be produced. I hate taking turns but they are fine for people who like them. There is always a risk that the same 3 people will sing 90% of the songs and there is usually a counterpressure to that so it usually works out. There are plenty of opportunities during the day for poeople to get their turns. Night for me is for not taking turns, not talking much, just producing great music. And what is worse than looking and seeing the core of people who could produce great music is looking around and seeing they are all gone. Now I have to go and search the woods and outhouses and hollowed out stumps of trees to see where they went to. mg |
