BS: Gotta a Big Surprise for the P-Vine...NOT!

Subject: BS: Gotta a Big Surprise for the P-Vine...
From: Bobert

I love it...

I don't get too many chances to get on the scoreboard but...

...I got the bases loaded and I'm loving it...

I got a few things back in Virgina that I need to to get so I'm planning on going up in a couple weeks with my truck and trailer and bring them down here to NC...

Well, I did this rather large, somewhat heavy (600 pounds) metal sculpture about 5 years ago and left it back in Virgina... The P-Vine was happy to leave it behind as she said she didn't "understand it" but it's purdy decent sculpture... It is set in concrete but I have a couple hillbilly friends who are going to use a cutting torch to get it and I'm gonna bring it home an' it's going to be a major surprise and, yeah, she's gonna yell at me but...

...hey???

Life is good, right???

Hey, one day it will be right where it belongs and she'll be fine with it... I know that...

What is the subject of the sculpture, Beaubear?

Years ago I dearly wanted a cast concrete/fiberglass lawn sculpture that I ultimately chose not to get. I still today wish I could have gotten it- at the same time that I know that it is good that I never got it.

It stood about 3 1/2 feet high, of a pair of male hands cradling the nude form of a woman with flowing hair, eyes closed. There was such serenity and trust in the image that it is still vivid in my mind.

First of all, ain't me that needs the help, GFinS... It' the Ol'ster... Me??? "I'm young and able to buzz all night long so if ya hear me buzzin', baby,,, There;s some stingin' going on"...

Okay, Eb... this sculpture ain't all easy to describe... Lets' first say that I guess it would fall into the "post-industrial decay" style... I made it from two 400 pound metal "screens" that came out of 100 ton mulching machine Each piece has hundreds of oblong holes in it in a pattern and the, is curved and and would be like you cut the side out of about 1/8th of a cylinder each about 6 feet X 4 feet... I cut up beer cans to make the mock up so I knew how these two piece could intersect, be cut and welded... The first was set in a 4 foot deep hole with about 18 inches showing the way as I designed it and then concrete poured into the hole... The second was lowered over the first with my tractor bucket while the cuts were slowly made for the two to intersect and then welded together... That's the piece and it looks purdy decent...

Guess my second degree (in art) wasn't a complete waste of time as I buddied up with the Joe Siepel, the head of the sculpture department and actually learned some stuff???

Subject: RE: BS: Gotta a Big Surprise for the P-Vine...
From: Ebbie

I agree that it sounds interesting but just for clarification, B-Bear: What is the title of the piece? If you had it displayed publicly, where would it be? Museum of Modern Art? In a statuary garden? At the front of a tractor dealership?

Some years ago, before my time here, the city of Juneau, Alaska, commissioned a large piece of art to be set on the district courthouse lawn across from the Capitol building. I have never heard officially but I've been told that the artist (from 'down south') was paid $20,000.

It turned out to be something the community wouldn't stand for. It is of shaped steel about 15 feet high by maybe 8 feet wide, colored with baked on turquoise, matte finish. The front of it is shaped vaguely like the prow of a ship but there is no recognizable theme.

Anyway there was such an outcry by the community that the city ultimately uprooted it and it languished in pieces behind a metal shed for some years.

Eventually our Alaska State Museum said it would put it on its lawn and that is where it stands today. Kind of off to the side and out of the way.

Not that I'm suggesting that will happen to your sculpture.

"Tripodal (1970-1972) - Wichita, Kansas"

I've seen a lot of those in my days. I always wonder, "Why? What a waste of coin." I DO know Art and I'll bet he doesn't like it either. Hey. Fine with me if ya wanna pursue that avenue but shoe the children first with public money, eh?

The idea of draping Bobert's sculpture in various vegitation might be even more of an artistic challenget... and it could become a "living" and "changing" sculpture. What a great idea!

Subject: RE: BS: Gotta a Big Surprise for the P-Vine...
From: Bobert

Another highly dated piece of sculpture from the Max Ernst days of Pop Art... Most of that stuff leave me cold... the difference between good ar and bad art is that good art will always be good... Some of the Pop Artists left some decent stuff...

BTW, I've been working on the vegetation aspect and it even more genius than I originally thought...

The P-Vine just can't conceptualize stuff so lots of times when I come up with stuff she is reactive and negative and then once it is done she goes, "Well, I get it now"...

I have two places in mind for it but the one that is slightly ahead of the other will look great with the grape hyacinth vine twisting up thru it... Setting it is going to be tricky as I'm going to have to weld two long anchoring legs to the bottom just right, dig down at least 3 feet with a post hole digger, hold it in place with various wooden braces and mix and pour enough concrete to hold it in place...

This is going to be fun...

If you don't TRY to make it look like anything in particular, no one will know if it's 'correct' or not.

I like 'some' abstract stuff, especially if it seems to be really thought out, rather than just glued together randomly.... but I am REALLY impressed by Michelangelo's Pietà or Rodin's "Fallen CARYATID"

Well, it's about time, Rap... I mean, we been together for 14 years so I figured it would happen when the starts aligned... Happy days... This is going to make bringing home the sculpture just that more fun... I know, pulling up in the driveway with it and little preggie wife so glowing that she won't even notice the sculpture thru the glow...

Ya could'a made somethin' practical, like THIS. I don't recall whether it's quoted as bein' 60 or 90 feet tall.

Your description of yours sounds a bit like one made out of two sections of round tin silos, about 12 ft in diameter, each section about 20 ft long, that sits 'long side the old 81 highway down south of here about 30 miles.

We've also got at least two "dinosaur museums" in the region, with a variety of prehistoric lookin' things made out of old farm implements. One is a little east of town, and a smaller one is in a tiny town down in the Okla Panhandle, not too far from the windmill museum (where the windmills are real ones).

I've seen the exact same "clothes pin" sculpture in Richmond, Va., John... It used to sit in front of one of Richmond's waelthier families that supported the arts...

I'd love to see the silo piece... Sound like whoever did it and I would have a few things to talk about...

The sculptor, Joe Seipel, who I was friends with at VCU art school (where I got my 2nd degree from in fine art) was into metal sculpture and the bigger and heavier the better... He had one that he did as a joke... It was called the "Enviro-Plug" and it was just this industrial looking thing that if you can imagine a creek bed could be lowered in to make an immediate dam... As part of the piece he entered it in an industrial trade show, accompanied by fake sales people and a glossy brochure... To spice it up he had several of his friends outside the trade show picketing the "Enviro-Plug"... He gives a one hour slide presentation of the entire piece and subsequent experience at the trade show... Well worth the price of admission... lol...

Well, I could have called this but was hopin' that it wouldn't turn out like this but I think I said that one of the two hillbillies who were going to use a cutting torch to cut it out was/is a screw up... Well, he hasn't changed... Just got a call from him and the torch he has ain't up to the task and it's now too late (at least for the planned trip next weekend) to get it so I'll just get the rest of the stuff I have stored up there and so...

...no big surprise for now...

I will get it sometime but not this time...

Rats!!!

Patience is a virtue, they say- and sometimes it could save your life.

Just kiddin'- I too look forward to your describing the look on the P-Vine's face. :)

Just go down to the local junkyard. She'll be just as happy and surprised with a partially buried car.

If you plant it with something climby that needs harvested, you can keep an ongoing thread to keep us all updated on your toils and strains, Bobert!

I'm all for that!

It ain't about planting stuff on it... At this point it's a matter of finding someone with some decent torches to extricate it and then transporting it 400 miles, welding on new legs and setting it... But I am purdy determined and I'll get it figured out... Just not this trip... Plus, I already have at least 1000 pounds of stuff coming back in my Toyota truck and my homemade closed trailer...

BTW, I have two fairly nice antique sofas that just need to be recovered for free if anyone wants 'um 5that are still in Virginia that are staying there until someone steps up to take 'um...

Well, Sins... As I have just reported a glitch has arisen... One of my hillbilly buddies, who BTW has a Masters Degree from Hillbilly U in "Screw ups" did it again... Showed up with kid's torch for a man torch job... That means that it's gonna take some serious replaning on my part...

However, if anyone has the capabilities I can have my step son email a "decent" picture of it to ya and maybe someone can blue clicky it???

Re-planing or Replanning? THere is a huge difference.
