From: Neil D Revolution A Day in the Life Don't Pass Me By Come Together She Came in Through the Bathroom Window Of course that's just off the top of my head. Tomorrow it could be 5 others. I also think their cover of "Twist and Shout" is one of the great recordings of rock and roll, John's vocal just shreds, but it's not one they wrote. |

Across the universe Tomorrow never knows All you need is love Here comes the sun Get back Strangely, none of their early stuff nor any songs from Sgt Pepper were obvious choices even although I thought this was all very good too. |

31 Jan 12 - 05:07 AM (#3299541) Subject: RE: Okay, 5 Favorite Beatles Songs??? From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Please stay away from this thread if you are one of them. Ah! The sweet clang of the Mudcat gauntlet! I can't say I particularly like The Beatles, much less have five songs I might single out as favourites. Thing is, born in the UK in 1961 & raised by a loopy widow for whom the Beatles represented something entirely wondrous, it's hard to see them as anything special over and beyond the other aspects of the domestic ambience of my childhood (Rolf Harris, Pinky and Perky etc.) although I often talk of my Modal Ephiphany upon flipping over the AYNIL 7" and discovering the delights of Lennon's modal clavioline on the Beautiful People segments of Baby, You're A Rich Man which is otherwise ruined by Macca's poptastic banality. The Beatles were everywhere back then - and I soon grew to resent them, and welcome less visible proponents of a music to which they made significant contribution, but couldn't quite keep up with in the end, however admirable their enduring individual integrity, influence and inspiration in such respects. It is interesting that the first Bands I took to my heart were The Bonzos and Strawbs, both of whom specialised in overt Beatles pastiches; even as a kid I was under no illusions there... When all is said & done though, there is one Beatles song that shines out as a constant star in all too mutable a cultural firmament, and that is Tomorrow Never Knows, which gleams as brightly today as it did back in the day when my cousins first blasted Revolver on our wee mono record player in time for my 5th birthday back in August 1966. As an affirmation of everything that is good about being alive in a universe of a myriad wonders there is little to touch it really, though I often wonder what my mother made of it. |

31 Jan 12 - 08:18 AM (#3299596) Subject: RE: Okay, 5 Favorite Beatles Songs??? From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Basically, apart from specific biographical personal details, what Suibhne Astray said... [I'm 2 or 3 years older than him] and likewise, my Beatles inspired Band that I preferred to the Beatles was and still is "The Move" !!! Nonetheless, despite cycles of going for long years being sick of the Beatles and their most rabid internet fans, then for a few months rediscovering and relistening to all their LPs and enjoying them afresh again.. .. the 1st Beatles song that always immediately comes to my mind is "Blue Jay Way" - almost as good as any Roy Wood 'Move' Song... finding another 4 to complete a list of 5 favourite Beatles songs is more problematic... but would most likely be narrowed down to the "Help" ==> "Revolver" mid period.. maybe one or two candidates off "Hard Day's Night" ??? |

From: John P Today's List While My Guitar Gently Weeps If I Fell Strawberry Fields Forever Here Comes the Sun Eleanor Rigby It would be easier to pick five each of early Beatles, middle Beatles (Rubber Soul and Revolver era), and late Beatles (Magical Mystery Tour, Sgt. Pepper, White Album era). For some reason, Abbey Road stands by itself in my mind. |

31 Jan 12 - 01:29 PM (#3299748) Subject: RE: Okay, 5 Favorite Beatles Songs??? From: Marje If I Fell Here Come the Sun Yesterday I Should Have Known Better Blackbird Eleanor Rigby ..woops that's six already and there are more just as good. I'm finding that these songs (which were the soundtrack of my teens/young adult years) were so firmly woven into the fabric of my life in those days - places, people, relationships, feelings - that it's really hard to separate out the actual songs from the way they just seem now to represent and embody certain moments and situations for me. I know this can be true of many songs, but I think Beatles songs do it more than most, perhaps because each one is so distinctive. Marje |
