This Wednesday, February 1, Dave Letterman will celebrate being a late night talk show host for thirty years. Known for his outrageous stunts, dramatic interviewing style, and an understated sense of humor, sometimes whimsical and sometimes insightfully acerbic - musicians also know Dave as one who hosts and 'breaks in' some of the most stellar acts in music. Over the years, he (and Paul) have had the great taste to present musicians like:
Bob Dylan
Paul McCartney, playing on the roof of the Ed Sullivan theatre
Emmy Lou Harris
Joan Baez and Kris Kristofferson singing Me & Bobby McGee
Pete Seeger
Dolly Parton
Steve Earle
Nanci Griffith, singing Goodnight New York in the one of most poignant and touching moments ever seen on tv, right after 9-11,

and a bittersweet farewell to Warren Zevon at his end, and a gracious showcase of his son at the mike.

etc. etc. and on and on. Dave has shown a great respect for every musician who appears on the show, has become what FM radio was in the late 60's early 70s- a divining rod for all that's great in the field.

Congrats and thanks, Dave!!! - our talented and reigning King of Late Night.

30 years?! Seems like yesterday. Dave and his team are pretty good. Made me laugh a thousand times... or more.

"Known for his outrageous stunts,..

like discovering a Mensa group was holding a meeting in the building, and talking them into forming a VERY intelligent 50 person human chain down a flight of stairs and a long hallway to deliver him a soda from a vending machine.

Yeah... that was pretty cool, Bill. Nice bit of writing by the staff. Got a lot of laffs.

I too have appreciated some of the musicians he has presented more than those usually appearing on Leno's show.
