The link will take you to a video recording of music generated by the tree rings from a thin section of a tree trunk: click here for music "A tree's year rings are analysed for their strength, thickness and rate of growth. This data serves as basis for a generative process that outputs piano music. It is mapped to a scale which is again defined by the overall appearance of the wood (ranging from dark to light and from strong texture to light texture). The foundation for the music is certainly found in the defined ruleset of programming and hardware setup, but the data acquired from every tree interprets this ruleset very differently." It doesn't take long to realize that when the dark knot goes under the scope, the piano will produce a deep thud. It takes a mind to create a melody, and I'm old-fashioned enough to need a melody, at least part of the time. |

Minimalist melody doesn't really interest me either. But maybe there's a better tree slice awaitin' in the forest! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
