Play Your Favorite Tree Slice

This experiment could generate a whole new set of "ring tones." The link will take you to a video recording of music generated by the tree rings from a thin section of a tree trunk: click here for music

"A tree's year rings are analysed for their strength, thickness and rate of growth. This data serves as basis for a generative process that outputs piano music. It is mapped to a scale which is again defined by the overall appearance of the wood (ranging from dark to light and from strong texture to light texture). The foundation for the music is certainly found in the defined ruleset of programming and hardware setup, but the data acquired from every tree interprets this ruleset very differently."

Who needs musicians, when we've got forests?

And if there is a bear or Pope there?

The sequel to the hit tree slice tune might best be called...

Bobert-

Not all tree slices resonate beautiful music. Some only bark!

I'll leave now!

Well, Charley, it's always interesting to see what the technoguys are up to now, but I listened for a while and the music quickly became boring. It doesn't take long to realize that when the dark knot goes under the scope, the piano will produce a deep thud.

It takes a mind to create a melody, and I'm old-fashioned enough to need a melody, at least part of the time.

The top of my guitar is a tree slice. Does that count?

I tend to agree with you in terms of the musical score. Minimalist melody doesn't really interest me either.

But maybe there's a better tree slice awaitin' in the forest!

Oh blimey.. more dreadful boring ambient new age piano music for pothead tree huggers
and hippy clothes shops.

but.." hey man, it's beautiful, the trees are singing to us"

psst.. don't tell 'em they had to kill the tree and slice it up to get it to play any music..

oh go on then, tell the dopey new age ****s !!!

On further consideration, the musical saw , or better still, the tone of a revved up chainsaw
is far more enjoyable.

Klumper-

Back in the 1980's we had a chant base on Ronald Reagan's environmental remarks:

Radiation on the breeze,
Blame it on the killer trees!
