04 Feb 12 - 05:53 AM (#3301919) Subject: Tech: Virus Alert From: Owen Woodson I've been buying a lot of stuff from Amazon UK. As people will know Amazon send out quite a lot of emails telling buyers about the status of their orders etc, so I wasn't surprised when I received one this morning telling me about an order I'd supposedly cancelled. I couldn't remember placing that particular order, never mind cancelling it, but no matter. The grey matter isn't what it used to be, and I suppose it was just about possible they'd got me mixed up with someone else. The email, BTW, looked completely genuine, so I clicked on the link and up came a virus alert. I normally never fall for anything like that, and my AV software swotted it immediately. But it just goes to show you can never be too careful. FWIW. The email content is below. -------------------------------------------------------------- Your order has been successfully canceled. For your reference, here's a summary of your order: You just canceled order #186-5718118-816415 placed on February 4, 2012. The sane and sensible thing to do would have been to check my Amazon account and see whether I'd ordered anything under that name. The point is that I am usually ultra careful about anything like that. If they were able to smuggle a virus past me so easily, God alone knows who else they could fool. |
