Saw this on Celtic Connections in a Fado group; does anyone know how the tuning mechanism works ?

It's a double loop string, and you screw the tuner all the way down, put the new string on, and then screw it up again to tighten, and tune. At the top there is a row of knurled nuts on the end of a threaded shaft. On this shaft there is a collar with the hook for the string attached to it. The hook goes through a slot in the front, and this keeps the hook from rotating when the nut is turned, and guides it up or down the threaded shaft as required. It's a fairly primitive, but effective system

It's fairly well shown here

Same mechanism as the intonation adjustment on a solid-body electric guitar.

The girl singer, with that band, was a cracker and she could sing as good as she looked. I was well impressed.

That was Ana Moura, wasn't it? She's great, and still very young.

Hardly noticed her, what with trying to figure out the tuning mechanism.

Clearer now, thanks; thought they might be related to fine tuners.

I haven't seen the programme yet but I was at the concert. Did they show her breathtaking version of the Stones' No Expectations?

No, afraid not. Perhaps on webste as an extra, as they did with Gerry Rafferty tribute ?
