Tech: A New Facebook Malware Attack (Again)

A PC Advisor enews letter reports a new and rapidly growing infection on FaceBook pages, and implies some urgency in making people aware of it.

When discovered, Facebook found more than 60,000 users already infected, and it has been spreading rapidly.

A popup appears saying that the US has attacked Iran. If you click on the link you are told that you need an Adobe update to see a video report. The update, from a phony site disguised to look like the normal Adobe update page installs a phony "antivirus" that declares that you are horribly infected, and you need to install a special removal tool (for a fee). [Ho Hum Again]

This malware has been propagated separately using vulnerabilities in Facebook, and/or using Java codes, and/or using "unusual features" of the new (but non-standard) html versions. The phony sites the links take you to have been "rotating" faster than Facebook has been able to block them.

Since the source, PC Advisor, is a UK publication, the scam may be more prevalent there, although the report didn't say where it's appeared. Facebook is, of coure, "international" so you might expect this scam to spread anywhere.

There is absolutely nothing new about this crap, but the "news report" did imply some urgency in making people aware.

You are now aware.

John

Malwarebytes.com is a free (or fee, if you want to buy the full version) program that is useful in weeding out that junk. I've had to use it a couple of times to clean up friends' computers.
