From: GUEST,Calum Hi folks, It's not exactly hard to find a guitarist who teaches around here, but I'm a bit dubious about someone who teaches "rock, acoustic, jazz, blues, folk, flamenco, and the kitchen sink". So if anyone can name a teacher who can make me play like Bob Dylan, Martin Carthy, Bert Jansch, Dick Gaughan, John Renbourn, and Nic Jones (shouldn't be hard :p ) I'd love to hear of them. From: tonyteach1 Right I live in EAST LONDON and I teach rock folk acoustic blues jazz flamenco and piano bass and singing There are versatile guitarists who can do this Try the Registry of Guitar Tutors I do not know any teacher who can make you play like the artists listed above as they have their own styles. I suggest that developing your own style instead of being a pale imitation of an established artist is a better idea |

From: GUEST Thanks for your comments, Tony - my main point was that I think there's real value in a teacher who is as enthusiastic about your musical interests as you are. As for the question of imitation - well, if I could come close to their styles, I'm pretty sure I'd have developed my own opinions about what I liked by that point! I hate it as much as anyone when someone stands up and does a note-for-note cover of a Martin Carthy track, and I would never do it in public, but it doesn't mean there isn't value in learning how to do it. I don't think there's a great artist out there who didn't comprehensively dive into someone else's work before developing their own style. Richard - thanks. |
