BS: Good new, bad news(goodby to a good car)

The good news, nobody is hurt (If whiplash doesn't set in yet) The bad news is, we stopped for a red light and the driver in the pickup behind us was totally looped on some kind of prescription med. I've been in a couple of bumpums before, but never felt a jolt quite like this one. Bounced the car ahead of us enough to damage the rear of a third car some.
Anyone want to buy a used car ?

Ouch! Hate it when that happens. I'm glad nobody was hurt. Whiplash is not allowed! While you work things out, take deep breaths.

Goodness! There isn't much car left. What a miracle that nobody was hurt.

Get onto a claims farmer speedily - you could get several grand off the ramming car owner or his insurers.

The crumple zone seems to have worked well!

Glad you're all OK Dean.

Can you imagine what it would be like in, say, New York city if everyone at stop lights left two or three car lengths between them and the car ahead? Traffic would be backed up to Texas.

It might work well in Crabapple Cove, Maine.

Thanks to our friends here. We're feeling no ill effects, which is a pleasant surprise after that jolt. : ) And a car is after all just a car, but we both liked that car. : (

Just on the off chance that our dear "guest" looks in again:
Our insurance company has assured us that this one is not going to affect our rates. We were stopped dead, not that close behind the car ahead; we were hit hard enough to launch our car and the one ahead of us into a third card ahead. A young couple stopped immediately and told us, and the police, that the driver who hit us had been weaving all over the road for at least a few minutes. Said driver was very obviously impaired, but I didn't get close enough to smell liquor, so made no assumptions as to reason; a police officer who took my credentials for reference, then returned them to me at the wrecking yard where the car was trucked, told us that they had determined that it was prescription medication. Our state doesn't issue front license plates; I had removed (at our insurer's instruction) our back plate at the wrecking yard before taking the pictures.   Any more brilliant assumptions and admonitions on your part?

Richard Bridge: your reponse was appropriate and appreciated, but we have a no-fault auto insurance system in Michigan, so recovery from the other driver isn't normally part of the equation.
Lawyers around here frequently advertise their accomplishments in obtaining substantial settlements from the insurers of the injured parties.

So glad you are both okay, but a word of caution...give yourself time before not making any medical claims. Whiplash can take a few days, sometimes, to show up, plus any other injuries. I was broadsided by a young girl new to driving. I thought I was fine, refused the offer of a hospital visit and have a damaged spot near one vertebra to show for it.

Take care and I hope you get another car you like as well.

Thanks, Kat; our insurance people, office less than a mile away, have been good with us. The office gal made a point of noting possible after effects, particulary whiplash or from head jarring.

I agree with Kat - it's usually at least 24 hours and then the reaction to tensing from being hit really clobbers you.

Following too close is a factor at times, but if you're hit that hard from behind, all bets are off.

Even your insurance provider has an interest in settling this quickly, so don't sign anything any time soon. Look into the small print first. If the driver who hit you is under-insured or un-insured, then your policy kicks in.

Here's hoping that the driver of the pickup was not insured by State Farm or they would blame you for the accident.

Stopping by to clarify that when I wrote "Whiplash is not allowed" it was my way of saying that I don't want you to experience it. Let us know if you do or better yet don't experience whiplash.

6km... just 6km.

The plows don't hit the major roads here until there is 100mm of snow down and it started at 4PM after raining all day. The temp dropped fast and the initial accumulation was slow so there was no way to stop the buildup of ice-like-sheet packed snow on accounta ya don't put salt down in a storm.

So, after close to a foot of that white crap fell and was cleared, the salt trucks hit the major roads. Well, salt ain't gonna do any good at -fuckit'scold degrees in the dark hours. Ya gotta get traffic on it to work the salt in and not much goes on round here on a Sunday until the stores open at 10AM.

At noon, I drove about 6km round trip one of the busiest roads in town. I drove at 30 to 40kph, depending on traffic and what I could see on the road... the odd bare stretch and mostly slippery stuff. At 500m, the guy behind me decides that's two slow and changes lanes to get around me. Not just one lane. Two and a half lanes. That's where his ass end and the pickup truck's front end met.

At 1.5km, buddy is trying to turn left in a front wheel drive car. He accelerated okay for about 1.5m whereupon he lost traction on the slippery stuff between the lanes. The idiot in the 4X4 coming the other way was driving too fast and slammed on his breaks and I didn't look back. Didn't have to... I heard it.

At almost 3km, buddy that is about to come onto the major road doesn't, even though his light has turned green, on accounta he knew that the idiot driving too fast on the major road wasn't gonna get stopped... when he did get stopped he decided it was better to keep going than block the guy with the green light.

300m from my street, I was making a right hand turn from a parking lot. Big Dodge 4X4 was going too fast to make the parking lot entrance. He was on slush on top of frozen snow and ice. But he started to turn and put on his brakes. Now, ABS are good if ya know how ta use em. But, all I could see was the fuckin Ram on the hood at about shoulder level to ME comin straight for my left wheel. He took his foot off the brakes, turned the wheel, nailed the gas and managed to swing the arse end enough to just clear my front end. Of course, then he was in a skid and those 20" rear tires were throwin snow. Thank goodness there was no opposing traffin on accounta that big Dodge pushed a little car in the inside lane into the opposing laneS broadside.

I am home for the rest of the day.

How can they drive in this part of the world and not know that slush, snow and ice are slippery?

gnu, that may not be an all-time record for stressouts per driven kilometer, but it's sure gotta be a contendah; whew!

Well, it's a record for me, froggy. And I was driving an F150 4X4. Ya'd think ya'd be fairly safe, eh? Next time I come outta that parking lot in bad weather I'll take the exit with the traffic lights and stay back a bit until I get a green.

Once again... holy moly! That musta been scarey for youse. I noticed in the pics that the spare was untouched. The pickup would have hit just over the spare. Good thing on accounta a smaller vehicle mighta messed with yer gas tank seeing as that was such a nasty hit! Just thank goodness youse are okay.

Subject: RE: BS: Good new, bad news(goodby to a good car)
From: frogprince

Actually, the spare wasn't untouched. It probably doesn't show in the picture, but the rim edge of the spare was folded right back. The tire MAY be okay, if someone pries enough mess away to get it out. And the scare part was just the split second when the world exploded. Well, maybe a few moments of a confused feeling of am I/is she/ okay, or not, til our heads cleared from the jolt.

Subject: RE: BS: Good new, bad news(goodby to a good car)

Well, if it had been a smaller vehicle, the spare could have been driven forward at the speed the truck must have been going.

BTW, what was the truck? Make? Model? I doubt it was a big ass Dodge like I got a close shave with today... that woulda ended up on top a youse. I really don't know why the auto companies keep making bigger and bigger trucks. Playing to the big dick market?

Actually a Dodge pickup, I'm thinking midsize. Yes, the pickup had to slide just precisely over the rubber of the spare and snag the rim flange.

We were going right by the yard where the car is today, and my wife encouraged me to stop for a last "dig" in the mess. I groped around in the trunk area and found one good casual shoe of hers undamaged. She leaned over the front seat (no way the back doors would open) and found the other one, where I thought I had everything out. I'm pretty sure the old hatchet I used to drive tent pegs for over thirty years is entombed in there, but it would take too much effort with a pry bar or cutter to bother.

So lucky - when I saw the rear end, I wondered how it had avoided exploding the fuel.

And it was a nice car, wasn't it?
