Ah, yes, but no-one sings it quite like Christy, although Owain does a *superb* job...That's why I said what I did..

Afternoon, Dave!

But it's still not Christy Moore's song, it Jimmy MacCarthy's.

You should at least give the author some credit.

Quite Right. - Owain Harrison singing 'Ride On' by Jimmy MacCarthy. Made famous by Christy Moore. A favourite song of Coldplay, the Christy version that is of Jimmy MacCarthy's song 'Ride On' as played superbly here by Owain Harrison, who is also singing Jimmy MacCarthy's song, made famous by Christy Moore, even though it's Jimmy who wrote it.............

Owain Harrison's Facebook Page

And now, back to the thread...perhaps?

I happen just to have read a couple of CD reviews (in Tykes News) where songs were described as covers and this already had me pondering on the use of the term. IMHO 'covers' was rather the terminology used in pop music where the first performance of a new song was like the 'creation' of a role in the first performance of a new play. Local bands would then turn out and cover stuff so established by playing their best attempt at a copy to an audience who only wanted them to "play something we know".
On the folk scene our audiences are usually more discerning. We resurrect, rearrange, reinterpret, reinvigorate a song we have heard or found to pass it on in the way of the tradition and offer a newly inspired version of the song to interest our audience.

Personally, I try to avoid the term "cover". Writers write. Singers sing. Sometimes one does both. I would suspect that writers like to have other people sing their songs. That shows appreciation for someone's creation and usually means money in the pocket. But, there are occasions when songs become identified with a particular singer because a singer does an unforgettable performance of the song. I look forward to hearing various singers versions of good songs and do not think of songs as being "owned" by one person or group although I am sure publishers think otherwise.
