11 Feb 12 - 04:24 PM (#3306178) Subject: BS: The Santorum Hanukkah card From: Jim Dixon The Santorum Hanukkah card. OK, maybe it didn't come directly from Rick Santorum, but it was definitely sent by someone in Santorum's South Carolina campaign office. I don't know why this just came to light 3 days ago, if it was mailed in December. Why would a Christian (or someone who represents a notorious in-your-face Christian like Santorum) pretend to be celebrating a Jewish holiday in the first place? Wouldn't that alone be considered in bad taste? Isn't it, at best, just an obviously insincere attempt to curry favor with Jews? (Or is it just one of those mindless things politicians traditionally do, like kissing babies?) But then to put a blatantly pro-Christian verse from the New Testament on it? ("I am the light of the world..." etc.) What kind of an idiot would authorize this? |

12 Feb 12 - 11:26 AM (#3306955) Subject: RE: BS: The Santorum Hanukkah card From: Genie Not trying to be contrarian, but in this case I don't see anything hypocritical about Santorum's actions. Hanukkah is not an anti-Christian holiday, it's just not one that Christians personally celebrate. Christians and Jews share religious history up to the time of Jesus, and the main reason why most Christians don't celebrate Jewish holidays such as Passover, Purim, etc., seems to trace back to the early days of the Christian church, when the gentile Christians split off over the issue of circumcision (pun not intended but noted). Anyway, there's nothing about Hanukkah that a Christian could not, in good faith celebrate. For a Christian to send a Hannukah greeting to Jewish friends is no more hypocritical than for a Jew to say "Merry Christmas" to Christian friends. And since both Christmas and Hannukah are celebrated by many people pretty much in non-religious ways (dreydls, latkes, reindeer, mistletoe, etc.), why not send holiday greetings to those who celebrate those holidays, even if those people are not religious? There are better things to criticize Rick Santorum for. |
12 Feb 12 - 11:58 AM (#3306970) Subject: RE: BS: The Santorum Hanukkah card From: artbrooks Genie, I think the point of the objection is that the bible verse quoted is more than a little anti-Jewish (or at least anti-non Christian). |
12 Feb 12 - 12:02 PM (#3306974) Subject: RE: BS: The Santorum Hanukkah card From: GUEST,999 "There are better things to criticize Rick Santorum for." That's true, but the card is worthy of criticism, also. The Festival of Lights is a specifically Jewish thing. It was stupidity on the part of whoever did the card. There are greetings that are non-denominational, and one of them should have been used instead. Plenty to be found in the Old Testament. In the same way I object to community events where a prayer is offered and ends with "in Jesus' name, amen." At a specifically Christian event, no problem. But otherwise it's gauche to say the least. Not an argument, just a statement of my thought on it. YMMV. |
12 Feb 12 - 01:44 PM (#3307028) Subject: RE: BS: The Santorum Hanukkah card From: EBarnacle As a Jew, I found the quotation offensive. It is, to say the least, gauche to send someone a holiday card, celebrating their holiday, telling them that they are inferior. |
13 Feb 12 - 11:07 AM (#3307618) Subject: RE: BS: The Santorum Hanukkah card From: Nigel Parsons Okay, checked the quotation I am the light of the world I see nothing there that denigrates any other religion, nor that seems to exalt Christians above other faiths. |

I've done a basic google search on this Hanukkah card and can only find mentions of it on political blogs. I can't find a single article on what I would call the mainstream press. Slate is not known for publishing hoaxes. I'm inclined to think it's real. You'd think if someone were trying to smear Santorum, they would go the whole hog and put "Rick Santorum" on it, instead of "S. C. Team Santorum." As it is, the card has easy deniability. And it's hard to check, because I understand the South Carolina office has been shut down. The SC Primary happened January 21. Who knows where their records would be now? If you think only the "mainstream media" has credibility, then we're still waiting. Politicker isn't any more mainstream than Slate. |
