12 Feb 12 - 06:46 PM (#3307167) Subject: Peter Kennedy FSOB&I recordings From: Jon Corelis A search on "Peter Kennedy" on mudcat retrieves a large number of threads, but there don't seem to be any recent ones. I did that search hoping to find information on the status of the recordings PK had collected as research for his Folksongs of Britain and Ireland. There was a lot of discussion of these recordings, with various proposals about how and when they would be made publicly available on CD, but I couldn't find any clear final statement on this. Last year I had heard that the recordings had been made available through Camsco music, but when I emailed them in April 2011, I got a reply from Dick Greenhaus (who in the past has posted on mudcat; don't know if he still does) referring me to Topic Records, but I couldn't find anything about these on the Topic website. So I wanted to ask if anyone has any further information on the status of these recordings. Are they available anywhere? Or will they be? Thanks for any information. Jon Corelis |

Have you seen the following? Found here. ******* The Peter Kennedy Collection " ' Peter Kennedy died on 10 June 2006 and his wife, Beryl, earlier this year. A small group has been working with David Kennedy to ensure that Peter's collection of sound recordings, books, papers and other artefacts remains available in the UK for future researchers. This group was formed at Peter's instigation a few months before his death and is known as Customs and Traditions or CAT. It had become clear, in recent years, that maintaining the collection as a single entity was not going to be easy and so it proved. Peter's own efforts to secure a future for the collection were not, unfortunately, completely successful. There was some confusion in the months following his death but a set of agreements is now in place that has, we believe, resolved the situation as well as could be hoped in the circumstances. The outcome of these agreements is that Peter's collection has been placed as follows: 1. The library of about 3,000 books has been given to the Halsway Manor Society as well as his collection of journals. These will, once catalogued and prepared, be added to the existing library and the whole will be known as the Kennedy Grant Memorial Library. The gift to Halsway Manor Society also includes Peter's collection of commercial recordings of folk music comprising c.3,000 78rpm records, 3,000 LPs, 500 CDs/DVDs, 50 HMV test pressings, and other items. HMS has also received a full set of the folktrax recordings issued by Peter Kennedy. 2. CAT, with David Kennedy, has worked with Tony Engle, head of Topic Records, and Dr Janet Topp-Fargion, curator of the World and Traditional Music Section of the British Library Sound Archive, to secure an agreement in respect of the archive of sound recordings. As a result of these discussions Topic Records has acquired the rights to the recordings and will be working towards releases of as much of the material as is commercially viable. This will obviously take some time but they hope that these releases will happen early in 2009 - Topic's 70th year. The British Library Sound Archive will house and protect the tapes and, in due course, they will be available for listening via the British Library procedures. As well as the recordings themselves, Peter's files and records form part of this archive and will provide valuable background information for the recordings that are issued and for future researchers. 3. A small collection of papers and photographs that came from Maud Karpeles' estate have been given by David Kennedy to the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library where the bulk of her papers are housed. Some other family artefacts and papers have also been presented to the VWML. Peter's sales outlet, Folktrax, ceased trading on 30 September 2007 and the associated website was closed. Following requests from a number of people it is planned that, with the support of the Traditional Song Forum, a revised version of the website will be opened shortly as a source of information about Peter's work and as a permanent memorial to Peter and Beryl Kennedy. CAT will be wound up in the next few weeks. Obviously, it will be some time before the new holders of the material will be able to make access to it available or to deal with more than very basic enquiries. In years to come, though, there will be a large quantity of new and interesting material from and about Peter Kennedy's collection that will enable future researchers to form their own views of this complex man and his work.' I've only had a chance so far to briefly go over them, but there seem to be two answers to the basic question. First, Topic is going to release a continuation of their Voice of the People series which will include (or consist of?)the PK recordings. I couldn't find mention of it on the Topic web site, but will check back later. Second, some of the FTRAX CDs are available from CAMSCO. I appreciate Dick Greenhaus compiling that list, and I'll probably be ordering some of these at some point, once I figure out what I want. Which brings me to another question, to which the answer is probably no, but I'll ask it anyhow: is there any easy way to map the songs from FSOB&I to what is on individual CDs? I'm more interested in some traditions than others. In theory one could use the search functions on the CAMSCO and Topic sites to look for individual tracks, but that seems a rather daunting method, especially when one considers that there may be Celtic languages involved, and that the assumption that the track titles are going to be identical with the titles in the book may not be a completely valid one. Does this mean that only the CDs which have these titles from the book include the PK recordings from the book? Also, I should have explained that I'm particularly interested in knowing which CDs are likely to have which Celtic-language recordings from the book on them. Or if any of them do. Here is the section that refers to the Kennedy cassettes:- I'm sure I have cassette recordings of Galusha's "Paddle the Road with Me," both from the Warner Library of Congress recordings and from Kennedy's Folktrax, but they are both back in Portsmouth, NH, in my apartment. And I'm in Northwest Montana (!), in the Rocky Mountains, hold up with a friend perhaps for the duration of the virus scare. My work is all being canceled, my doctor appointments are being tele-communicated and Portsmouth is so shut up I wouldn't be able to do anything at all. Sorry I don't have friends close enough to go get things from my apartment. |

15 Apr 20 - 06:38 AM (#4046206) Subject: RE: Peter Kennedy FSOB&I recordings From: Jim Carroll I've been woring in fits and starts on creating a file of full versions of the songs that were edited for the albums (which was nearly all) One of the things I found out was everything that was claimed to have been collected on behalf of the BBC didn't 'make it back to base' A local friend whose father, Grandmother, grand uncle and several aunts and uncles were major contributors to the BBC project told me that some of the songs and music given to Kennedy which is recorded in family documents do not appear in the index and have been lost to the country and the family The albums themselves incude material that is not available elsewhere I know this to be the case with English material When/if I ever get round to finishing it, anybody who wants an unedited set is welcome to one I have already digitised the present set and edited both the Caedmon and Topic notes into one file Due to its chequered history, I have no qualms in offering it to whover wants it Jim |

Earlier this morning I was listening to a recording made at a family party by two sisters, siblings of Steve Ledford in the 1960's, beautiful stuff. |
