Just playing the air "Fair Mary Mulholland" (Maire Ban Ni Maoilcallann) from O'Neill's book. It's a beautiful tune.

Does anyone know of any words to it? (Either in English or Gaelic?)

Or has anyone set any words to it? It really deserves to be sung.

This is what The Fiddler's Companion has to say: Fair Mary Mulholland:

O'Neill identifies the tune as the air of a County Down folk song, learned by O'Neill's assistant, Sergeant James O'Neill (no relation), from his mother. The original title was unknown so the compilers named it for James's mother.

So you may have to rely on someone recognising the tune rather than the name.

Any chance of hearing it online, or of someone setting up a Midi? There's an interesting biography of Sergeant O'Neill available, incidentally.

If it's any help the music can be seen on Chris Walshaw's abcnotation site: Fair Mary Mulholland. You can get a midi file from the download links above the notation.

OK, here's a (very, very) rough version I've just recorded direct to my laptop's crappy built-in speaker. Excuse the scratchy sounding violin and wobbly intonation: I've only played it two or three times! I'm probably playing it a bit too slow as well.

What I like about the tune are all the C sharps in it - unusual for a tune in the key of G. Makes it sound very Swedish. Played on the fiddle, you could do some great great D drones, and the occasional E drone, to up that "Swedishness".

(obviously I mean "microphone", not "speaker" above!)

Hmmm... Can't say I recognise it offhand - though the opening phrase has a vaguely familiar ring to it.
