Obit: Anthony Shadid, reporter on Middle East

When a reporter dies, more may be written than for others because his or her friends are writers. However, what's being written about Anthony Shadid, "two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign correspondent who died on Thursday at 43", indicates the untimely death of an extraordinary person. Worth taking a look.

At Work in Syria, Times Correspondent Dies: Rick Gladstone, NY Times, describes Shadid's death apparently from an asthma attack brought on by being around horses as he was secretly entering Syria. Tyler Hicks, a Times photographer who was with Mr. Shadid, carried his body back across the border to Turkey.

Terry Gross is typically not on the Friday program of Fresh Air, they have one of her staff host it and replay interviews. But yesterday Terry was there herself to discuss and then replay their last interview, from December.

Thank you, Becky, for starting this thread. I heard a lot throughout the day on NPR. So sad.
