20 Feb 12 - 12:02 PM (#3311279) Subject: BS: Free Lauren Medina! From: GUEST,BigDaddy I just read on Yahoo news yesterday about the arrest of college student Lauren Medina at McCall's Pumpkin Patch in Moriarty, NM. She had spent $75 there, but apparently forgot to pay for a $2 pumpkin. McCall's called the police in spite of Ms. Medina offering to pay for the pumpkin. She was arrested and is to appear before Magistrate Judge Steve Jones tomorrow Tuesday (02/21/12) morning. She was offered a year of probation if she would plead guilty. She is maintaining her innocence and appears to be headed for trial by jury. For all the armchair internet activists out there, I'm providing the following: McCall's has a website and Facebook page. Magistrate Steve Jones can apparently be reached at 505-832-4496 and/or 505-384-2926. I'm hoping to help raise enough interest in, and attention to this matter, to stop this ridiculous waste of taxpayers' money. Maybe one of you 'catters out there could compose an appropriate corrido. |

From: GUEST,999 "New Mexico Spares No Expense In Prosecuting Dastardly Pumpkin Thief Today in ridiculous court proceedings: the case of a woman who stole a $2 pumpkin and is now facing a jury trial. The thief, Lauren Medina, allegedly committed her horrible crime at McCall's Pumpkin Patch in Moriarty, New Mexico this past October. According to Medina's sister Annette Atencio, Medina spent $75 on funnel cakes and other food, and then went on some hay rides. Sounds like a pleasant afternoon, but as she was leaving, Medina picked up the small pumpkin and forgot to pay for it. She was approached by police, and she said, "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. Can I pay for them?" They said no and handcuffed her immediately. This is all coming from her sister, so it's possible there's something more to the incident, but the court case itself, at the end of the day, is about the pumpkin, the whole pumpkin, and nothing but the pumpkin. Medina, a 23-year-old college student, was given an order to appear in court. She assumed when she did, the charges would be dropped, but they weren't. She was instead given the option of pleading guilty and doing probation, but she refused, and now the case is headed to the jury. By this point, many times the original $2 amount must have been spent in legal costs, and the poor jury is about to be deeply annoyed that they had to jump through the hoops of jury duty simply to adjudicate a case about a damned pumpkin." I just sent the following note to McCall's: Lauren spent $75.00 dollars at your place and you are charging her with trying to shoplift a $2.00 pumpkin when all she did was forget to pay for it. Are you nuts? My name was attached to their e-mail form. There are a few villages somewhere missing their idiots. |

Then she, AS she was leaving, picked up a pumpkin and FORGOT to pay for it??? I think she might get an F in economics at uni. |
