Gordon Bok and Kendall Morse perform - 15 March

20 Feb 12 - 04:17 PM (#3311346)
Subject: Gordon Bok and Kendall Morse performance
From: kendall

On March 15th aboard DiMillo's floating restaurant in Portland harbor, we will be doing a performance of songs and stories from working on the Maine coast. We hope to have a few other fishermen to fill out the bill. We did it last fall at a museum in Rockland, and now the Maine Maritime museum wants us to do it again.

Duane D. & I will be in Maine at that time & will be attending. Hope to see some of you there. To make it easy, here's a link to information on the event. And here's a link to the DiMillo's Restaurant website. I wonder if they still have the $14 early bird specials. We might go for dinner before the 5:30-7:30 pm program on Thursday, March 15th!

best,

Barbara

On March 10, Gordon Bok will be at Stone Soup in RI. I'll start a thread on that closer to the date. It doesn't look like Kendall will be with him here, though. Shucks!

Yes indeed...please see if it can be videoed for posterity..prosperity? WHAT are the odds of two such handsome men being in the same place at the same time? Plus they sing and/or narrate so nicely too. mg

"Maine Maritime Museum will host its first fisherman poetry reading at DiMillo's On the Water on the Portland waterfront. This unique gathering, called Voices of the Sea: The Poetry and Song of Maine's Fishermen and Those Who Work on the Water will feature working fishermen and those who work on the sea reading their own original work, poems and songs that examine their water-borne careers through verse.

Joining the fishermen on stage will be folksinger and sailor Gordon Bok. Among the singers and poets presenting their work are Frank Gotwals, a lobsterman from Stonington, Maine, Stefanie Alley who lobsters out of Islesford, Jack Merrill, who lobsters and serves on the board of the Maine Lobstermen's Association, and Kendall Morse, a former Coast Guardsman turned folk musician and humorist."

Wow, I haven't been to DiMillo's since I was a kid. As I recall they had a good chowder back then, but the entertainment selection has obviously improved. Sorry to miss this one, but glad I got to enjoy both your company last weekend.

Folks, you should hear Kendall recite "Lorena." There wasn't a dry eye in the room.

Thanks, Dan. I have always loved that song.It was quite a leap for me to chance reciting it, it's a whole different ball game, and it is much harder to do than singing it.

Man, Kendall, I sure wish I could've got you and my dear departed friend Jim Gill together in a room. Jim was a Warrant in the CG and spent his time on lightships, then drove ferry's and tour boats on San Francisco Bay for years. He loved listening to and playing this folk and seafaring music and lore. Some of my favorite memories are of playing music with him on the beach in San Diego. That glimpse into your CG times just tantalizes the ears thinking of the stories you (and JG) could tell. I sure hope someone has gotten those stories down for posterity, sir. Too much history to let go. I hope to hear you and Gordon play. My mind boggles. Thanks for your work.

I can't get up this far north, and hate that I have to miss it- I haven't seen Gordon Bok in ages, and I wish he'd make the rare venture and come to the Big Bad Apple once in a while.

I know he does a lot of sea music, and hey, in case he's forgot, NYC is SURROUNDED by water.

I'm not saying it's as clear and pristine as the waves off the Maine coastline, but water it is.

Hi, lhg. I ain't so sure ya can call the East River water, although I have heard there's some in it. If Jesus hisself came back today to repeat his stint on the Galilee, that's where he'd take the walk, imo.

Personally, I could care less...............

That's the night they premier the new episode of "Wizards of Waverly Place" where Alex gets a case of the shits and Max loses his wizard power and the Gorog eats Tokyo. You can see how much better that is than a bunch of guys smelling of fishbait singing about the time the head blew up on the Merry Blowjob....................

No, I think I actually could care less. For instance, if you weren't performing, then I would definitely care less.   Or if Gorog ate all the lobstermen aboard the Merry Blowjob, I would be even more interested in "Wizards" and less in listening to Bok peddle his cheap fans. Ya' know Kendall, I don't think those fans are UL listed.

It was a very good evening - a very varied bill with songs and poetry from people making their living on the water.

Kendall was a riot - he had the whole room laughing - and Gordon sang two of my favourites of his songs.

We had a meal in the restaurant afterwards - company included two daughters, one ex-wife and her husband Kendall and me and Gordon. Lots of good food and laughter.

It was a good evening. Got to meet deepdoc and his lady but no time to chat.Never did say hi to Allison.
Some highlights:
It opened with a lobsterman whose name I never got - Steve?? He sang two songs of his own. Harbor Lights and a song about a young fisherman's first experience with a nor'easter.
Gordon performed his piece about overhearing two fisherman on the radio - slice of fishing life. Another was a story he put to a woodcarving - Jenny. Has a neat chorus but people weren't singing along.
Kendall lost in the fog..."How do you get to Camden?" he calls. "My father takes me" is the answer.
The poetry readings were fascinating. From Aunt Mary's musings on a goose to a fisherman's brief comment on the beach filled with children. The poets are lifelong fishermen including a woman from Downeast.I would love to hear more from her.
Hope they do it again next year.
