BS: Unabashed beg letter (read on)

So, as some of you know, I had the privilege of having a heart attack on September 22, 2010. Got real lucky and had no real permanent damage.

My solution was to become a cardiac athlete.

I went into serious cardiac rehab and celebrated my six-month anniversary by completing the Philadelphia American Lung Association Fight for Air Climb in about 14 minutes. That was a run up a 50-floor building.

Well, the year has come and gone and this year it's time to get serious about putting up a nice number in my age range (I'm 52).

So the deal is, we do this for glory but we also do it for money. My dad has COPD, and his dad's death was accelerated by his going into the Lancashire UK coal-pits at the age of 12 or so.

Yeah, it's a 50-floor run that I'm going to do "once for the money," but I practice it on a stair-mill it most days of the week, sometimes twice in a day. So I'm not gonna die.

So if you can find it in your heart to toss a few bucks our way for the Lung Association, I'd sure appreciate it.

It's easy. Just go here and do your thing.

It won't hurt a bit.

Well, not for you.

For me, it hurts like hell, but it kind of hurts so good.

A penny a step is enough. There are 1088.

Okay, I didn't want to do it, but I will.

For the price of a donation to the Lung Association cause above, I will exercise on your behalf. I will give up the benefits, and you will get them without leaving your sofa.

So you can request 50 floors of stair climbing, 20 minutes of elliptical cross-country running, 10 minutes of trotting a treadmill at 4.3MPH and 15-degree incline, and I will do them so you don't have to. I can also do abdominal crunches over a ball and work-outs on the Roman chair. An upper-body weight circuit will incur an extra charge, as I'll have to be sore for you for three days. I'll stationary cycle for you, but that has a boredom surcharge.

Donate enough, and you'll be in great shape in no time.

Sorry, I don't "do" running.

OK. I'm broke. However, I may have $10 in PayPal. (Damned whiner.)

I'm in. BUT, if you croak on step 9,657, it ain't my fault. (And if you croak on step 9,657 you're gonna feel real stupid, because you coulda just dropped at step one and saved yourself the agony.)

BM (ex cross country guy).

If I croaked on step 9,657 I'd feel real dumb, since the climb is "only" 1088 steps. And I'd miss all the free stuff at Tir Na Nog afterwards (mmmmmm, Guinness for breakfast). I do wonder how some of the folks who don't prepare make it. I do a practice climb on a gym stair mill just about every day (twice some days) and got down to 9 minutes for the first time yesterday. New tactics.

I didn't croak. Made it to the 50th floor in 11:49.74 (that's minutes, not hours). 240/656 overall, 183/365 among males, 16/40 among those in the male 50-59 age group.

Went out too aggressively at the start, and paid for it the rest of the journey, as well as in a time a minute or so slower than I'd have liked. But, the point is making it.

You can still donate to the cause via the link above.

Karen reports I was nice and pale by the time I got down the elevator, probably due to my being deep in recovery with a BP of something like 80/50. A full Irish breakfast of rashers, bangers, black and white pudding, eggs, beans, and tomato, washed down with Guinness at the sponsoring Tir Na Nog pub was the reward. We call that "breaking training!"

Wow. Not sore. Not even a twinge.
