I know the Jody Stecher version, if that's helpful. Don't know if it's the same as as Grisman/Garcia. I'm a very slow typist so if you say "yeah, that'd be helpful," be patient.

Serendipitously enough, I always thought the Armstrongs (George and Jerry) did the definitive version of this, Jerry on mountain dulcimer, if I recall.

Somewhere in Mudcat is a thread on this very subject. Surely someone who understands this wonderful place better than I can find it for you.

G'day,
I'm sure this will be a version of the Twa Sisters. Do a lyric search for #10 - you'll find several versions. One of them will probably be close to what you want.

Cheers,
Alan

THE DREADFUL WIND AND RAIN

There were two sisters came walking down the stream
Oh, the wind and the rain
the One behind pushed the other one in
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

Johnny gave the youngest a gay gold ring
Oh, the wind and the rain
Didn't give the oldest one anything
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

Pushed her into the river to drown
Oh, the wind and the rain
And watched her as she floated down
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

She floated 'till she came to a fisher in the pond
Oh, the wind and the rain
Cryin' father, oh father there swims a swan
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

Miller pulled her out with his drifting hook
Oh, the wind and the rain
And pulled that fair maid from the brook
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

Left her on the bank to dry
Oh, the wind and the rain
And a fiddling fool come passing by
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

Out of the woods came a fiddler fair
Oh, the wind and the rain
He took thirty strands of her long yellow hair
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

And he made a fiddle bow of her long yellow hair
Oh, the wind and the rain
And he made a fiddle bow of her long yellow hair
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

He made fiddle pegs of her long finger bones
Oh, the wind and the rain
He made fiddle pegs of her long finger bones
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

And he made a little fiddle of her breast bone
Oh, the wind and the rain
Whose sound could melt a heart of stone
Cryin' oh, the dreadful wind and rain

And the only tune that fiddle would play was
Oh, the wind and the rain
The only tune that fiddle would play was
Oh, the dreadful wind and rain

easier for me to post than e-mail.hope it helps

Extending the scope of the discussion a bit, Bob Dylan pinched the structure and the recurring line (lightly altered to "Oh the cruel rain and the wind") of Twa Sisters for "Percy's Song". The Fairport Convention recording is the definitive one (Dylan's own is a bit obscure and only available on the Biograph box set).

There is also a version of "Oh, the Wind and the Rain" done by the autoharpist Kilby Snow. Instead of two sisters walking it is two lovers in a boat. The man pushes the woman in. She gets fished out at a mill and they make a fiddle from parts of her. A real chilling song and well done.

Since it's already kind of a grisly song anyway, we add our own verses, like:

He made a salad bowl from the top of her head...
He made a xylophone from her little rib cage...
He made a hammer handle from her little femur bone...

etc., new ones improvised all the time

Well intentioned, Chet

In the version I've just recorded on Borealis, there's a bit of deserved retribution in the last verse.

"And the fiddle cried out for all to hear,
Oh the wind and rain.
I'm drowned for spite by a sister dear.
Cryin' the dreadful wind and rain."

Any of you knowledgeable ‘caters able to point me towards the origin of this version of the Two Sisters/The Wind and the rain please?

THE WIND AND THE RAIN

‘Twas early one morning in the month of May
Oh the wind and the rain.
Two lovers went walking on a bright spring day
Crying in the dreadful wind and rain.

Well he said “Oh, my lady, will you marry me?”
Oh the wind and the rain.
“And my sweet wife you will always be”
Crying in the dreadful wind and rain.

But she said “Oh no, that can ne - ver be”
Oh the wind and the rain.
“For you’re much too poor for the support of me”
Crying in the dreadful wind and rain.

So he spun her around and he stabbed her to the ground
Oh the wind and the rain.
Then he threw her in deep water where he kneeew she would drown
Crying in the dreadful wind and rain.

But she floated on down to the millers mill pond
Oh the wind and the rain.
The miller fished her out with his long fishing line
Crying in the dreadful wind and rain.

Well, the miller laid her out on the banks to dry
Oh the wind and the rain.
And a fiddling fool come a-passing by
Crying in the dreadful wind and rain.

He made fiddle pegs out of her long finger bones
Oh the wind and the rain.
And he made a fiddle bow out of her long yellow hair,
Crying in the dreadful wind and rain.

And he's made a little fiddle body of her breast bone
Oh the wind and the rain.
Whose sound would melt a heart of stone
Crying in the dreadful wind and rain.

But the only tune that fiddle could play
Was, Oh, the wind and the rain
The only tune that fiddle could play
Was, Crying in the dreadful wind and rain.

unclenort, upthread at 11 Oct 99 - 04:19 AM, posted the lyrics of the Grisman/Garcia recording of this song with I think only one serious correction needed: Fourth stanza, first line should be

Floated 'til she came to a miller's pond

When I say, "should be", I mean this is how it's given in the liner notes and also this is how Garcia sings it on the CD.

As sung by Julie Fowlis and Eddie Reader

Bha dà phiuthar ann 's iad a' coiseachd sìos an t-sràid
O an t-uisge is a' ghaoth
Phut an tè bu shine an tè eile dhan an t-sruth
Sìor chaoineadh, an t-uisge, is gaoir na gaoithe.

There were two sisters came walking down the street
Oh the wind and rain
Older one pushed the younger one in
Crying oh the dreadful wind and rain

Oir thug Seonaidh dhan tè b' òige fàinne àlainn òir
O an t-uisge is a' ghaoth
Cha d' fhuair an tè eile aon sian dhe chuid
Sior chaoineadh, an t-uisge is gaoir na gaoithe

So she pushed her into the river to drown
Oh the wind and rain
Watched her as she floated down
Crying oh the dreadful wind and rain

Flodradh gus an d'ràinig i linne mhòr a' chasg
O an t-uisge is a' ghaoth
Athair, o athair, seall an eala air an t-snàmh
Sìor chaoineadh, an t-uisge is gaoir na gaoithe

Then out of the woods came a fiddler fair
Oh the wind and rain
He plucked 30 strands of her long yellow hair
Cried oh the dreadful wind and rain

Is rinn e bogha grinn dhen gaoisnear bàn
Oh the wind and rain
Then he made a fiddle bow of her long yellow hair
Sior chaoineadh, an t-uisge is gaoir na gaoithe

Agus rinn e cnagan-fidhle dhe a corragan caola
Oh the wind and rain
And made fiddle pegs of her long finger bones
Sior chaoineadh, an t-uisge is gaoir na gaoithe

And he made a little fiddle of her own breast bone
O an t-uisge is a' ghaoth
Which sound would melt a heart of stone
Sior chaoineadh, an t-uisge is gaoir na gaoithe

Is an aona phort a thigeadh a-mach às an fhidheall
O an t-uisge is a' ghaoth
The only tune that the fiddle would play
Was oh the dreadful wind and rain

There were two sisters came walking down the street
Oh the wind and rain
Older one pushed the younger one in
Crying oh the dreadful wind and rain

'Cos Johnny gave the youngest one a gay, gold ring
Oh the wind and rain
Didn’t give the other one anything
Crying oh the dreadful wind and rain

So she pushed her into the river to drown
Oh the wind and rain
Watched her as she floated down
Crying oh the dreadful wind and rain

She floated till she came to the miller's pond
Oh the wind and rain
Cried Father, oh Father there swims a swan
Crying oh the dreadful wind and rain

Thern out of the woods came a fiddler fair
Oh the wind and rain
He plucked 30 strands of her long yellow hair
Cried oh the dreadful wind and rain

Then he made a fiddle bow of her long yellow hair
Oh the wind and rain
Made a fiddle bow of her long, yellow hair
Crying oh the dreadful wind and rain

And he made fiddle pegs of her long finger bones
Oh the wind and rain
And made fiddle pegs of her long finger bones
Crying oh the dreadful wind and rain

And he made a little fiddle of her own breast bone
Oh the wind and rain
Which sound would melt a heart of stone
Crying oh the dreadful wind and rain

And the only tune that the fiddle would play
Was oh the wind and rain
The only tune that the fiddle would play
Was oh the dreadful wind and rain

Someone has to ask, now that a Gaelic version has been posted: is it traditional or a recent translation from English?

According to the liner notes on Julie Fowlis' album Uam they've translated it from the original Irish American into Gaelic.
