If anyone is reading this thread wondering whether to go...

Having been last year, I can only say 'Go!' - a great venue, great line up and great value (and friendly, helpful organisers). This festival is well deserving of support.

Anyone deterred by the cost of potential Hotel B&B might consider that Chester is only a short drive away and blessed with a wide range of offordable B&B (trip Advisor website might be a good place to start).

Unfortunately the Roaring Forties can't make it this year...but I can only endorse some of the above comments. If it's even half as good as last year it's well worth a visit.

Yeah, I'd heartily endorse all those comments - twas a fabulous, fun 3 days, from which I (and my voice!) am still recovering (in the nicest possible way!)...

Tremendous atmosphere, far too many brilliant performances to name, and tons of fine singing... (good to meet ya too, K&M)...
It was a real privilege to again be part of the loyal crew keeping our maritime music alive.

But let's not forget it just couldn't have even happened, or been such a magnificent success, without the sterling efforts of the Shanty UK organisers and committee. What a team!
Congrats again J & D, and massive thanx! Here's to the next Gathering!

Alio and Bernard paid a visit. You can listen again to last night's Sounds of Folk on Oldham Community Radio.

Yes, the Oldham Community Radio 'Sounds of Folk' Broadside Outcasts were there on Good Friday, and we did a bit of recording - the plan is to put a full programme together, broadcast date yet to be confirmed!

We interviewed Anna Shannon, Shanty Jack and Nine Tenths Below, and recorded a song from each. We also had a chat with 'Doxy' Julia about the festival.

Alio has nearly thawed out, now...!

Hi Everyone,
We'll we're back home and recovering. The weekend went in a bit of ahwirl for us. There were over 40 different performers there, singaround space all weekend, stalls, narrow boats, children's activities. I can't remember when I saw so many happy smiling faces or was hugged and heartily kissed (on the cheek!) by so many bearded people in such a short space of time.
We are allaglow! Derek and I have put some photos up on our facebook pages, but we will be doing a 'proper job' with photos and some video clips on the Shanty UK web site. Keep looking as they will be being added over the next few weeks.
I am not going to name any individual artists in this post as all of them made an invaluable contribution to the success of the event. All came because they wanted to be there, to share the music and help keep it alive!
Our thanks go to all the artists and the volunteers who unstintingly and with great goodwill gave their time to make this weekend a warm, inclusive and successful event enjoyed by all. The responses we have had from the people who came along to watch have been lovely. Some from people who have never heard this kind of music before, had come to the museum on spec and stayed for the whole weekend, others who found us last year and wanted to thank us as this year they had brought their whole family.
So thank you all again, and here's to 2013!!!

Hi Everyone. Although hughie wasn't well enough to come on Friday and Saturday. He was well enough to join Paul Sirman for a couple of songs in the Rolt Foyer. The acoustics were amazing and from the reports I've had I'm really sorry that I missed it.
Hughie assured me he is well on the mend. Chris said he's well on the mend too and as she had allowed him out I believe her. We were so pleased to see him.

Les is suffering with a Lurgy which should hopefully clear up in a short while. We'll be inviting him again next year as he was sorely missed. Great writer, great all round performer and all in all a great bloke!!
Cheers
Doxy,

Yes next week we start work planning the 2013 event. We already have a number of artists committed to coming, stalls and volunteers who want to come back. Watch this Space!!!

I sat in for an hour or so of singaround on Saturday - enjoyed it very much. Sang two songs - one of which was The Maid of Cabra West, discussed elsewhere in this parish! Turned out another participant had been planning to sing a Liverpool version... Which he did - very interesting comparison.

From: Ross Campbell

Sorry I missed "The Maid of Cabra West" from you, Martin, and the Liverpool version (whodunnit?) I re-discovered Frank Harte's rendition a couple of years ago, and after a bit of digging found the original (London) version which I had heard many years before, and a Birmingham version which was as appropriate to its location as the other two. I decided that there had to be a Blackpool/Fleetwood version and now there is.

If you can identify the singer of the Liverpool version, I would be very interested in tracking down that too.

I unfortunately couldn't hang around for long after our Red Duster sets (and thanks to Julia and Derek for the opportunity to present our stuff), but I did hear a half-set from Males de Mer (very impressed) and caught Hughie's spot (great to see and hear him in good voice). Missed so many people, better luck next time!

Ross

Hi Ross

I didn't get the guys name - but he was aware of Mudcat and promised to post the set here! He, and others who heard us talking, knew the origins of the song and seemed to agree that Derek Brimstone was largely responsible for its one-time popularity in England. I'll go back over the relevant Mudcat thread later and see what can be added.

If I could add a third plea for the Liverpool version of The Maid of Cabra West! I would love to see that, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

It was me (without cookie) earlier on saying that 3 generations of my family enjoyed the festival - went with my wife and kid on the Saturday to enjoy the singers around the museum, and then came again with my dad on the Sunday to take up residence next to the bar/singaround! Some good ales on, at a very good price this year. I mainly drank the Titanic Stout, my dad was enjoying the Spitting Feathers (Basketcase, I think it was?)

Brilliant atmosphere and great singing, I hope this becomes an annual tradition because I'm already looking forward to next year
