Tech: File Compression Audacity

My copy of Audacity ® 1.3.13-beta (Unicode)has suddenly decided to export files at 128 kbs, instead of the 320 kbs which I normally use. For the life of me I can't see any way in Audacity to change the bitrate.

Can anyone help? Many thanks.

Sorry, I should have added that I'm saving in MP3.

Version 1.3 beta.
The option button is available as soon as "Export" is selected from the File menu.

Click "File".
Click "Export". (opens "Export File" window).
In "Save as type" box (select mp3).
Select "Options". (shows "Specify mp3 Options" window).
Select bitrate from "Quality" drop down list.
Click OK.
Click save on "Export File" window.

Also if you look at the bottom left corner of the window, you should see Project Rate (HZ) clcik on the drop down icon to change.

Hope that is what you are looking for.

Owen- I have the same version of Audacity. When you tell it to export a file, a window opens up. You'll see "Options" in that window. Click on that and set the compression where you want it to be. No clue as to how yours was switched.

Best of luck!

Agreed. That's what Mudcat is best at. Helping each other in our hour of need.

Thanks Maeve and Arthur. I'm onto it and I'm now exporting files at 320kbs. I can only put my stultifying stupidity at not noticing the Options box down to old age. But then old age is a convenient excuse for just about everything these days.

If you will insist on boasting about stupidity... Many of us miss the options that are in front of us!

Glad you got it cranked to the right setting!

You obviously don't know Arthur the way I do, Maeve! :-) :-)

Being stupid is about the only thing I've got left to boast about.

But ... if the original recording is at 128 or lower, e.g. 64 kpps, Save As... MP3 using 192 or 320 ain't gonna increase the fidelity. All you will end up with is a ginourmous file sounding as 'muddy' as a 64 kbps recording. Its termed entropy.
