Nowadays I wonder why people don't have a 'safe' room all set up nice and comfy and go sleep in there automatically when the conditions are right for a storm? I wouldn't relish getting everybody up at 2 in the morning and hustling sleepy and scared people into a basement. |

Houses blown up, cars turned over, trees down, no electricity, etc... So we dodged that... I really did have a plan and my step son and wife kinda kept an eye on things during the night in case we had to implement the plan... Okay, I'm not saying the plan we perfect but it was better than being in the house... We did, however, get a lot of rain and our pond is badly flooded and it we get any more rain we might lose our driveway... The water is up to the edge of it right now... The pond is about 2 foot above flood... But I think we're okay... Thanks all for your concern... Especially my good buddy, brucie, who never pisses me off too bad... B~ |

Lots of wind and rain but the tornado risk had dropped off. I cannot imagine what the people in Maryville, Indiana are going through. The little village of about the same size as mine is completely destroyed. People lost everything including family members all over the large swath of the storms. The sheer size of the extreme and high risk area was unbelievable. On the plus side, with today's communications and technology, I'm sure many people owe their lives to the early and extensive warning. My heart goes out to all of those affected. Gonna need two 10 inch pipes under the portion of the driveway the runs over the dam... maybe a cattle crossing with a spill way... I donno... Basements are uncommon, at least in my neck of the woods, and in this part of the state are never completely underground. Towns do not tend to have civil defence sirens, and I don't think one would wake me in the middle of the night anyway. We do have automatic telephone alerts in many counties and municipalities. It is foolish to not have a weather radio with a loud alert. I am acutely aware the house where I now live does not offer anything remotely adequate in terms of shelter in the event of a tornado. I don't know if I would be better off in the deep ditch along the front of the lot, in the long and narrow interior hallway that runs most of the length of the house, or in the one interior closet - in the bathroom, but the back wall is a 1/4" plywood panel to allow access to the shower/tub plumbing, and the opposite, exterior side of that wall is a thin, acrylic tub enclosure panel. I think I would head for the interior hall, and grap cushions from the couches to lie under. If time permitted and my son were here to help, I'd drag the futon off the guest bed to place over us to protect from falling trees and roof trusses. I don't spend time worrying about these things, but I do wish I could figure out the best plan in the event it was necessary. In the event of a hurricane warning (rare, but they do occasionally occur this far inland,) I would probably evacuate to either a shelter or a friend's house. There is lots of time to react with a hurricane warning. Not so tornados. Is an at-ground-level crawl space safer than a hallway or closet? |
