Lyr Add: After the Ball (was over)-parodies

After the ball was over, She took out her glass eye. Stood her cork leg in the corner, Hung up her hair to dry. Put her false teeth in the basin, Turned out the light in the hall; The rest of her went off to slumber After the ball.

(This is the version my father, George Gordon, used to sing in the 50's)

A popular theme. Try a search for #651 in DigiTrad for some variants.

After the Ball was over
There on the sofa she lie,
She put her false teeth in salt water
She took out her lovely glass eye
Her cork leg she kicked in the corner
She hung up her wig on the wall
Ther rest of her went to sleep then,
After the ball.

Okay, so maybe that's not the version you wanted...

"After the Ball" was written about a true experience , sort of -- and the location was the ballroom above the Turners' Hall in Milwaukee. The ballroom was restored sometime within the past 10 years and I got the story from an article in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal.

It's also said he overheard a lovers' quarrel at a dance in Chicago and thought up the line "many a heart is breaking after the ball", liked it and used it when he wrote the song. He was living in Milwaukee and probably attended dances at the Turners' Hall, too.

after the ball was over
katie took out her glass eye,
put her peg leg in the corner,
hung out her hair to dry,
put her false teeth on the table,
hung her tin ear on the wall.
now what was left of poor katie
after the ball?

I heard an even more revolting version 50ish years ago-
put her cork leg in the corner,
Coughed up her bottle of rye.
   the rest essentially the same.

The version we've heard goes...

After the ball was over,
she lay on the sofa and sighed
she put her false teeth in water
and took out her lovely glass eye
she kicked her cork leg in the corner
hung up her wig on the wall
and the rest of her went to bye byes,
after the ball.

A second verse from 1960s New Zealand students, that follows approxiamately the same as above:

Her head when she wakes in the morning,
Will not have an ache nor a pain.
It also fell off her torso -
This semi-detachable Jane.
"I no longer am what I was, dear,
what I have left is my all.
Treat it with all due respect, dear -
After the ball."

My mom used to sing:

After the ball was over,
Mabel took out her glass eye,
Put her false teeth in a tumbler,
Pulled out a bottle of rye,
Put her false teeth on the table,
Hung her wig on the wall,
After the ball was over,
There's nothing left of Mabel at all.

After the ball was over
Mary took out her glass eye
Stood her peg leg in the corner
Washed off the paint and the dye
Put her false teeth in some water
Hung up her hair on the wall,
That's all that was left of poor Mary, they say,
After the ball.

My mother's version from maybe 50, 60 years back.

The theme is at least 17th century, probably older. I'm getting deja vu here. I'm sure there has already been a thread on these spare-part songs.

A different song, but right out of the same "playbook" of mischieviously altered material - a parody of "Silver Threads Among the Gold," another hoary oldie from the turn of the last century.

"At the boarding house where we live,
Everything is growing old.
Silver threads are in the butter,
All the bread has turned to mold.

When the dog died, we hat hot dogs,
When the cat died, catnip tea.
When the landlord died, I left there;
Spareribs were too much for me..."

for those too proud to look things up in Digitrad, there's:

Once a pretty maiden climbed an old man's knee
Asked for a story-"Papa tell me,
Why are you lonely, why are you sad,
Why do your shopmates call you a scab?"
I had friends, pet, long, long ye-ars ago,
How I lost them you soon shall know;
I'll tell it all, pet, tell all my shame;
I was a scab, pet, I was to blame."

cho: After the strike is over,
After the men have won,
After the shops have opened,
After the notice is down;
Many the heart is aching,
Though the hope seems bright
That many a scab will vanish
After the strike.

Brave men were fighting, standing side by side,
Fighting for justice, fighting with pride,
I then was with them---with them heart and soul,
But when the test came, I left them in the cold,
I thought it best, pet, best to turn a scab;
Best to return, pet, to the job I had,
That's why I'm lonely, that's why I'm sad,
That's why my shopmates call me a scab.

cho:

Many years have passed, pet, since I won that name,
And in song and story they have told my shame,
I have tried to tell them, tried to explain,
But they will not listen, pleading is in vain;
Everywhere I wander, everywhere I roam,
The story of my shame is sure to find my home,
I'd give my life, pet, I'd give my all,
If I had not turned traitor, or scabbed at all.

D.J. O'Malley (under the name D.J. White) wrote the cowboy song "After the Roundup" (aka "When the Works All Done This Fall", 1893) to the tune of "After the Ball". Lyrics have already been posed in other threads. Nowadays, people usually sing it to other, less arty tunes.

After the ball was over,
Sally took out her glass eye...
Put her false teeth in some water,
and hung her complexion to dry!

Put her cork leg in the corner,
Hung her wig on the wall...
And that was all of poor Sally,
After the ball!

The "revolting" line above, "Coughed up her bottle of rye" sounds suspiciously close to the bit my mother sang me about "Corked up her bottle of dye." Oral transmission/folk process, I guess.

After the ball was over
Maggie took out her glass eye,
Put her false teeth in some water,
Corked up her bottle of dye,
Stood her false leg in a corner,
Hung up her wig on the wall;
Then what was left went to slumber
After the ball.

(Could've been "all the rest" instead of "what was left." I'm not sure.)

I like Barbara's mother's version best in this thread.

The only thing I would add to this discussion is a variation substituting the word "switch" in the line "hung her wig up on the wall". My grandmother sang this parody to me. She was from rural central Illinois, born in 1883.

This is a slightly different version I learned as a kid in the 1940's

Hung up her hair to dry

Put her wooden leg in the corner
Hung her tin ear on the wall
What was left went to slumber

These are all fairly similar so I may as well post the version I learned from my mother and passed on to my two daughters. Real oral tradition or what?

After the ball was over, Maggie took ouy her glass eye,
put her false leg in the corner, corked up her bottle of dye.
Rinsed out her teeth in the basin, hung up her hair on the wall,
and all that was left went to bye-byes, after the ball

I might as well add my mom's version, from the 50's.

After the ball was over,
Mamie took out her glass eye,
Put her false teeth in water,
Hung up her wig to dry,

Stood her peg leg in the corner,
Hung her tin ear on the wall.
And all that was left was her shadow
After the ball.

There you go, Mom, now you're out in cyberspace!

Oh so funny! I just heard this in a movie we watched last week, which made me remember and wonder where this came from.

Here's how MY Mom sang it:

After the ball was over Katie took out her glass eye,
Put her peg leg in the corner,
Corked up her bottle of dye,

I don't remember the rest - I'll have to check in with my siblings!

Thanks for all these postings and variations - they made me laugh!

I grew up with the same tune with slight variations:

After the ball was over
Mary took out her glass eye.
Put her false teeth in water,
Hung up her hair to dry.

Threw her cork leg in the corner,
Hung her wax ear on the wall.
That's why you'd never know Mary,
After the ball.

After the ball was over
Nellie took out her glass eye.
Put her false teeth in a tumbler.
Hung up her dyed wig to dry.

She put her false leg in a corner
Placed her tin ear by her bed
After the ball was over
Nellie was better off dead.

My old headmaster at primary school was a part time jazz musician who used to get us all together on a Friday afternoon to sing songs from the music hall days etc. The version he taught us( in 1977 ish) was this:
After the ball was over, she took out her glass eye.
Put her false teeth in water, shook from her hair the dye.
Kicked her cork leg in the corner, stripped off her false nails and all.
Then what was left went to bye-byes after the ball.

This is the real version, and I know this because my Nanna born in 1893 sang it to me 100s of times throughout my childhood. Nanna came from a large very poor family and only affordable entertainment was the local Eastbourne Music Hall, admission a penny I think she said. I'm certain this is closer to the original because it has more alliteration.

After the ball is over
See Nellie take out her glass eye
Put her false teeth in water
Cork up her bottle of dye
Kick her cork leg in the corner
Hang up her wig on the wall
All that is left goes to bye-byes
After the ball.

After the ball was over
Johnny took me for a walk,
He took me behind some bushes
And said let's have a talk;
He pulled oput a hairy monster
And put it between my thighs,
I said oh no John don't
Or you'll make my belly rise.

Took her wax ear from the cupboard,
Uncorked her bottle of rye,
Got her false teeth from the water,
Chased down the dog for her shoe.
If only she can keep her wits about her
And find that damned pot of glue.

After the ball was over,
Katie took out her glass eye,
Put her peg leg in the corner,
Hung up her wig to dry,

Hung her wax ear on the wall.

For something completely different, we turn to the U.S. Marine Corps Aviation Wing, VMF-214 ("Black Sheep")in the Pacific in 1943:

After Rabaul is over,
After the close of day,
Count up the Japs and Zeros,
But just let me get away!
Take all your Navy Crosses,
Medals and ribbons too,
Along with my orders and stuff them
Right up your avenue!

After Rabaul is over,
After Bull Halsey's day,
MacArthur can have the credit,
Just send me home to stay!
I don't want to be a hero,
So take your wings of gold,
To hell with the southwest Pacific,
I just want to grow old!

My father used to sing a football- related version but I can't remember the complete lyrics. Those I recall are:-

Line 1 After the ball was over, after the whistle blew
Line 2 ?
Line 3 ?
Line 4 Head over heels went the goalie
Line 5 After the ball.

The parody was not linked to a specific football team
(as are one or two in this thread) although the version I heard was sung in Ipswich, UK.

Can any one (probably based many years ago in Suffolk, UK,) shed any light on the missing lines?

My grandmother would sing:

After the ball was over Annie took out her glass eye,
stood her wooden leg in the corner
corked up her bottle of dye
Put her false teeth in some water
hung her blond wig on the line
After the ball was over
Annie said she felt just fine.

My grandfather sang the same song but at the end he would say
after the ball was over
Annie crawled into the bed and died.

And this was part of my early childhood development.

‘Bout what they were going to do

Jim Valentine got the ball, lads
And thowt he would easily score
But Barney copped ‘im and gently dropped ‘im
They’ll meet on an ‘appier shore

My Mum used to sin a version of this which ran:
"One glass eye and a wooden leg
And I said, 'Is that you,Mona?'
She said, 'It is and the rest of me
    Is over in the corner!"

After the ball was over
She took out her glass eye
Put her false leg in the corner
Corked up the bottle of rye
Put her false teeth on the counter
Hung her wig on the wall
What remained to be seen
After the ball
