SENECA FALLS
by Robyn Huck

Her mood it was rebellious, her timing it was right.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton made up her mind one night.
She put one ad in the paper, and that's all it would take,
to gather women from miles around to upper New York state. (wo-oh-oh)

Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls, we'll go up to Seneca Falls.
Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls, we'll go up to Seneca Falls.

Eighteen forty-eight the year, the need for women's rights starts to be clear.
You can't own property nor can you vote.
Law says you're not a person once you marry a bloke.
No higher education, not for little ladies,
A woman's lot is not to think so just have lots of babies! (o-oh)

Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls, we'll go up to Seneca Falls.
Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls, we'll go up to Seneca Falls.

They weren't man hating women. They loved kids and the family bond.
But after a lifetime of running in place they knew the principles were wrong.
So at that first convention the declaration was renewed.
The phrase "created equal" refers to women, too! (wo-oh-oh)

Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls, we'll go up to Seneca Falls.
Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls, we'll go up to Seneca Falls.
Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls, we'll go up to Seneca Falls.
Seneca Falls, Seneca Falls, we'll go up to Seneca Falls!

Written by a counselor at Indian Brook camp for girls, in Plymouth, Vermont, in 1980 (a couple years after my last year there). The cabin she was a counselor in, the first built at the camp entirely by campers and summer staff, was named "Sojourner Truth".

Happy International Women's Day!

Fight the willful amnesia!

Whoops - a correction from Robyn - it was actually 1984 that she wrote the song.

A friend was reminded of this related Schoolhouse Rock video, Sufferin' til Suffrage.

And a rather different approach: Bad Romance: Women's Suffrage
