From: Stilly River Sage Transcribed by an American listening to an American accent, phonetically represented (where words don't make a lot of sense): Giddayup, Jericho, a-lay the wiff we'll go to Albuquerque, Albuquerque, Albuquerque, Albuquerque (pronounced "Albu-que" each time) Giddayup, a Jericho, she's waiting there for me and n/or my Suzi-que, my Suzi-que, my Suzi-que, my Suzi-que, Roses in her hair She'll say pale face glad you're here Oh, that cutie pie . . . That's .36 seconds into the recording. It takes a bit of listening. I'll try again later. SRS |
10 Mar 12 - 10:50 AM (#3320926) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Giddy Up Jericho (Smiley Burnette?) From: Ron Davies "simple video clip" from an old Gene Autry movie--probably 30's or 40s, therefore at least 70 years old, done at a rapid pace. Nobody need be reproached for not getting all the words. Sounded to me as if there was something about "sleep in a teepee--not me", in addition to the text SRS has extracted. Smiley Burnette was a hugely underrated talent--multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. As I recall, he also wrote "Riding Down the Canyon", one of the most delightful "Western" songs ever. Smiley says he sold it to Gene for $5---Gene bought it in advance:. "I said to him as he was drivin': Hey, how'd you like to buy a song?"---a song he hadn't written yet. Wondrful book on Gene (with info on Smiley), as well as early "Western" music, "Western" movies, the early music business and a whole host of other stories: Public Cowboy No. 1 , by Holly George-Warren. Above story is on p 127. |

25 Mar 12 - 01:58 PM (#3328689) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Giddy Up Jericho (Smiley Burnette?) From: Iona There is a town in New Mexico, about fifty miles from Santa Fe, which bears the name of Abiquiu. It's pronounced "Abacue". That fits better with the song. I can't find the song listed as one of the songs Smiley wrote, and I can't find any info about it. So here's the song, yet again, with the new an improved location. Giddy Up, Jericho, I lay the whip, away we go to Abiquiu Abiquiu Abiquiu Abiquiu (pronounced "Abacue") Giddyup, Jericho, she's waiting there for me you know (still pensive on that one) my Suzi-que, my Suzi-que, my Suzi-que, my Suzi-que, Roses in her hair She'll say pale face glad you're here Oh, that cutie pie Me get sleepy in a teepee?
