BS: Four Fishermen Lost near Columbia Bar

It looks like four fishermen did not survive the loss of their boat..somewhere outside the Columbia Bar. They were from Warrenton OR, somewhere in Wisconsin, and one, age 19, was from Ilwaco WA USA. Coast Guard has suspended search. News reports said fishing but I wonder if it was crabbing..they get so close to shore and it is so dangerous..of course then you might think bodies would have been found but they are swept away...

These songs etc. we sing about this place are true..graveyard of the Pacific..RIP. If anyone wants my coast guard song about a miracle rescue last year, email me at mgxxxxxx@centurytel.net   mg

Also one of the bar pilots had a fall into the river in the dead of night last week as she was transferring to a pilot boat..but they rescued her right away. mg

I live in Seaview...just about two days ago I was down at the ocean and remember seeing boats so close to the shore..you almost never see boats offshore here because the water is so shallow and the currents are so strong..but you do see them in crab season...I asked someone at work why they were even closer than ever..I mean right where the waves break..and he said they were probably picking up their crab pots..and they use the boats for multiple purposes so they could crab out of a fishing boat that would not be suitable for the territory they were in. Today is a clamming day so if anything should wash ashore it would be quickly found.

Here is my new song that I have never even sung

Crab Boat Song

One by one they turn their lights on
All the boats at sea
There is one I set my sights on
Shine your lights on me

First they flicker then they twinkle
All the boats at sea
The ocean turns to periwinkle
Shine your light on me

Every family has a son
All the boats at sea
You pray he will not be the one
Shine your light on me

Every family has a daughter
All the boats at sea
Don't let her fall into the water
Shine your light on me

What will all their crabbing fetch
All the boats at sea
Still it is the deadly catch
Shine your light on me

Shallow banks and foul weather
All the boats at sea
At least they're lined up all together
Shine your light on me

Mary ... In January of 1960 the troller "Brenda Lee" sank on the Westport (Washington) bar. Two fishermen died, one was rescued. I was aware of that event and have been researching the facts. I've go a half-written ballad about it. If I ever get my archiving done I hope to complete the song.

Those are such dangerous waters.

... "Those who work on the land, they know where they stand,
They work and they sweat and slave,
But those brave men who work on the sea,
They work with one foot in the grave ... "

Excellent song, Mary.

The sea is always with us, and she is an unforgiving mistress.

They have been found near their overturned boat. Three bodies have been recovered. A search will go on for the fourth.
