I have a special request:

A close friend of mine just had a baby and wants to sing the song mockingbird to him. I am not sure of all the words to it. If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it:

"Everybody have you heard, Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird And if that mockingbird don't sing Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring..."

(needed another line and a couple others rearranged...I think this is close to the orig., although, we always sang "papa"

reflecting a "when cockle shells turn silver bells" or a "when hell freezes over" philosophy.

I think I learned this in grade school in the 1950's. I like it because bringing Papa in gives the baby a whole family, and the promise that Papa can buy another pony gives the baby security.

Hello there,
I grew up in the southern states of USA and I’ll share with you the way the song was sang to me as a child. However, oddly enough the lyrics are rather inappropriate for a baby, so I did not carry the tradition on down with my own children. But I have a good laugh to myself when I think of the words of this song the way I grew up hearing it. Here it goes:

I just listened carefully to this YouTube, the Four Lads singing "The Mockingbird" of 1952. When I heard this as a kid, I mostly noticed the noisy ending. Now I notice the beautiful harmony and the togetherness of the first half. Notice of the power in that bass voice.
