From: Bob Pfeffer A friend of mine is interested in finding the lyrics to an old Latin hymn from the 1300's or so, which he heard in an Ingmar Bergman movie. He's pretty sure the title of the hymn is "Tu, Domine", saying that the phrase "Tu, Domine" gets repeated many times in the course of the hymn. Can anyone supply them, or point to a reference that does? |

Old hymn; appears in the post-Agincourt scene in Branagh's Henry V, scored by Paddy Doyle. Non nobis, Domine, Domine Non nobis, Domine Sed nomine, sed nomine Tuum da gloria? (Not to us, o Lord, not to us, but to Your name give the glory.) The Latin is very old -- Shakespeare's 1599 text has Henry saying that for the victory they should sing "Non nobis" and "Te Deum." |

As I listened, the "nomine" sounds more like "nomini" -- Non nobis, Domine...sed nomini tuo... Drat those inflected languages. |

09 Apr 05 - 03:39 PM (#1456455) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tu Domine From: Q (Frank Staplin) The music to "Non nobis domine" used in the Henry V movie was composed by the 16th c. English composer, William Byrd (1543-1623). With corrected spelling- Non nobis domine, domine non nobis domine, Sed nomini, sed nomini, tuo da gloriam. There is speculation, but no evidence, that the piece was composed for the Shakespeare play. The Church uses these words: Non nobis domine, non nobis, Sed nomini tuo da gloriam, Sed nomini tuo da gloriam. The full Mouton text and translation is here: Non nobis domine |
