Tech: Genealogists Interest Item

Although it doesn't tell much that will be immediately useful, a brief video of some of the resources and activities ongoing at Ancestry dot com might be of interest to some here who have ancestors with reputations they're not afraid to know about.

Those active at Ancestry may already know about most of it, but it's nice to see it in pictures - I suppose.

Video: Rare look inside Ancestry.com

The text at the link is a (partial?) transcription of some of the narrative in the video.

(It almost makes it look like you might actually get something for all the big bucks they charge?)

No video, John, just the text of...interesting, though, but still not worth the big bucks, imo. Every once in awhile, I sign up for their free trial and use up all of my time researching, but I also make sure to cancel before the freebie is up.

I got the video when I checked the link in preview, but it does come up after all the text appears to be loaded. Maybe you're just a speed reader and it didn't catch up with you?

It should "insert itself" into the text near the top, so if you had already scrolled down below that you might not have seen it when it did get there(?)

(When I clicked just now, it did take about 30 seconds for the video to appear - 11 years in web time - which is a lot slower than on my previous couple of visits. There seem to be a couple of ads that have priority and load slowly.)

Thanks, John, but no luck. Maybe it doesn't like Firefox? No worries, though, I found it on YOUTUBE. Thanks, again!

I've used Ancestry for years - I think my sub's about £30 a quarter, which saves a hell of a lot of money on train fares to London and back. This is for the UK records, of course.

Years ago, I used to travel up to London for the day - over an hour each way, spend all day hauling down huge volume after huge volume from shelves, or fry my eyes over reel after reel of microfilm - often coming away with very little for my pains and probably missing stuff. It was like panning for gold for a month and getting a few grains.

Then I joined Ancestry and accomplished more in 5 years than I did in the previous 20! Of course, more and more stuff came on line in that time, but being able to sit at my laptop and sift through dozens of records in comfort is a joy. Online ordering of BM & D certificates is also a luxury, as is the UK 1911 census - though both of these incur extra expenditure. It's also good to see Irish and Scottish records getting on line as well.

I've certainly had my money's worth although I am running out of peopel to look up - until the 1921 (UK) census comes online. Only 9 years to wait (100 year restriction). How long I'll keep paying up is a different issue...

Yes - I've been debating whether to close the sub - I seem to have got most of what I want. And then little tidbits crop up and I find myself going through its data again!

And, of course, new stuff keeps coming available - WW1 military archives, for example - most useful.
