Little girl's song from movie; The Piano?

Just saw this movie, with Holly Hunter & Harvey Keitel, for the first time, last night. Hunter's character's daughter sang a beautiful little song, at one intense moment. Some fo the words sounded like "Lassies lay down".

Anybody know the name/words/tune for it?

Thanks,

kat

There are a couple of websites devoted to the movie...maybe what you are looking for can be found there. I started to look but then remembered I was supposed to be working...here's one of the sites

Here's the site for Michael Nyman's music publisher, G.Schirmer. I did a composer search and they have the score for the Piano Concerto, for one piano, for two pianos and for string orchestra

Thanks, Mian. I'm still looking, though, I couldn't find anything on the song. I will try again though, couldn't get into the unofficial Anna Paquin homepage.

The only song I remember hearing Amanda Panquin's character singing was Barbara Allen but the next time I see it I'll try to pay attention -- if I can tear my attention away from Holly Hunter's breathtaking nude scene... <>

Do you still have the tape? What other lyrics could you make out?

Thanks, Wolfgang, but I didn't see anything about the song, just the piano, which I didn't care for.

Matthew: good to see you here more often, now. I missed the very first part of the movie, so maybe she did sing B. Allen, but that is one I know and I think would recognise. I don't have a tape of it, as I watched it on cable. I will see if they are showing it again and try to listen for more words.

The scene was later in the movie. If I remember right, Flora (Anna P's character) was going through the woods, climbing on logs ans such, in the rain. I think it was after an encounter with her stepfather. Drat! I am going to have to watch it again. Hope it's on.

Thanks everyone.

I took out the video when I went home on Friday and tried to make out the words for Anna's character when she was singing on her way to "redeem" her mother:

The grand old Duke of York
He had a thousand men
He marched them up x x x x
And he marched them down again.

I also took out the video on the weekend and recognized the Grand old Duke of York and Barbara Allen, but there are two other songs that she sings that I don't know. I spent a lot of the weekend watching movies with kleenex beside me, my head for research is still fuzzy. Great movie though, I'm glad it was brought to my attention.

The Grand old duke of York, he had ten thousand men, He marched them up to the top of the hill and he marched them home again,

And when they were up they were up, and when they were down they were down, and when they were only half way up they were neither up nor down.

As my Dad sung it to me.

Its marvelous. I'm in love with Harvey Keitel now. Don't tell my husband. I've just been through a book of scottish songs and I think I may have identified the one that the girl plays on the piano in front of her stepfather. I'm taking the movie out again this afternoon just to check. I'm going on imperfect memory and stuffed sinuses here.

Hey Matthew B. I'm glad someone else noticed... was that a superior posterior or what?

Well imperfect as the memory is it still worked out. When Flora plays for her stepfather, she plays The Flow'rs of the Forest. The tune that my old book of Scottish Minstrelsy says is "The old melody of which the modern melody is the embellished extension." Words are by Miss Jane Elliot published about 1755. Flora sings the second verse;

At bughts in the mornin', nae blythe lads are scornin',
Lassies are lanely, an' dowie, an' wae;
Nae daffin', nae gabbin', but sighin' an' sabbin',
Ilk ane lifts her leglin', an hies her away.

It's a nice song, I'll try and learn it now. If I can get Harvey Keitel and his breathtaking nude scene out of my head.

Sopho, THAT'S IT!! Thank you, thank you! Any chance, when your head unclogs, that you might send the tune by MediaRing's VoizMail? If so, I'll send you my email addy. If you don't have MediaRing, there are couple of threads on it, or, if you want to give me your email addy, I'll sned you a voice message through it, you'll be linked in and can download it. It is easy to use, if you use Internet Explorer. I haven't been able to get it to work for my sister who has Netscape.

I know what you mean about Harvey Keitel! Esp. with the tribal tattoos; he did a very, ummmmmm, yummy, and sensuous, like Mian said, & luscious job of wooing Hunter. And, yea, guys, she looked really nice, too, except for that hairdo. What ever made society think that was an attractive way to do up long hair?

Curious thing: on BBC America, the *good* parts always get blotted out by a blue hazy dot; I KNOW it's not the BBc doing it. Then, same cable company, they show the full monty with Keitel, no blue dot, nothing. Wonder who makes such decisions.

Ah, well, thanks a bunch, ladies. You've made my day!

I wondered what that song was, too. Thanks.

Does this song Flowers of the Forest have anything to do with the expression of sympathy when someone passes away?

I don't mean to complain, but seeing Harvey a buffo didn't do a thing for me.

On the other hand, I can still see every inch of Holly Hunter in my mind when I close my eyes as vividly as if I were watching the video right now.

Yum!

Mian asks what the songs about. The Flowers of the Forest - written by one Jane Elliott some time in the 19th century I imagine. It's about the aftermath of a disastrous battle against the English (Battle of Flodden), back in the 16th century in which there were great number of Scots killed, including thenking. The women left behind are mourning. The Flowers are the dead soldiers. The quoted bit is from the second verse out of six.

Note from "The Illustrated Book of Scottish Songs" (1854):

"Jane Elliot, about the year 1750. 'The Flowers of the Forest' are the young men of the districts of Selkirkshire and Peebleshire, anciently known as 'The Forest'. The song is founded by the authoress upon an older composition of the same name, deploring the loss of the Scotch at Flodden Field, and of which all has been lost except two or three lines."

The air is played sometimes at funerals, but never, of course, at weddings.

Sorry kat I was looking and then got distracted. I will be trying out the Media Ring stuff tomorrow so I may be able to get it to you on Thursday if you send me your e-mail. Its not a difficult tune. The cold is on its way out just leaving me feeling whacked in its wake. In the meantime if I find it anywhere else I'll let you know.

Hi there I found a copy of the music through JC's ABC Tunefinder. Some of the longer notes are actually broken in the song and the ending in the movie went, "mi ray doh", not "doh ray doh".

http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/Tune?F=GIF&X=53&U=http://users.erols.com/olsonw/S1.HTM&N=S1.gif

This should get you there. I don't know any way yet to simplify things. Nerves mostly I guess. And the fact that I'm in a hurry at the moment.

The Flowers were the total male population of the area. From young boys to old men a whole generation died & with it went the hopes of repopulation, the results were relized for many years after. Maybe John Nolan will look in & shed more light here, this would be his area & his home ground. Barry

I think I put three versions of the tune on my "Embro, Embro" website. The main theme from "The Piano" (Gloomy Winter) is also there - like the whole scenario of the movie, it was plagiarized without attribution or any royalties being paid, and in the case of the movie's story, the original was still in copyright so they ought to have been.

There will be zillions of other copies of "Flowers of the Forest" out there.

Since I find this rather annoying I'll give the link to what Campion ripped off: The Story of a New Zealand River (1938).
