Bodleian, Vatican Libraries to be Digitized

Let's hope some of that sheet music is included in the digitization!

The Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (BAV) say they intended to digitize 1.5 million pages of ancient texts and make them freely available online.

The libraries said the digitized collections will center on three subject areas: Greek manuscripts, 15th-century printed books and Hebrew manuscripts and early printed books.

The areas have been chosen for the strength of the collections in both libraries and their importance for scholarship in their respective fields.

With approximately two-thirds of the material coming from the BAV and the remainder from the Bodleian, the digitization effort will also benefit scholars by uniting virtually materials that have been dispersed between the collections for centuries.

"Transforming these ancient texts and images into digital form helps transcend the limitations of time and space which have in the past restricted access to knowledge," Bodley's librarian Sarah Thomas said.
"Scholars will be able to interrogate these documents in fresh approaches as a result of their online availability."

The initiative has been made possible by a $3.17 million award from the Polonsky Foundation.

"The service to humanity which the Vatican Library has accomplished over almost six centuries, by preserving its cultural treasures and making them available to readers, finds here a new avenue which confirms and amplifies its universal vocation through the use of new tools, thanks to the generosity of the Polonsky Foundation and to the sharing of expertise with the Bodleian Libraries," Holy See Librarian Cardinal Raffaele Farina said.

Stilly - if you've been following the recent Lyr Req: Lully, lulley- Corpus Christi thread, you'll see that several of the Oxford institutions (including the Bodleian) have been digitizing some of their mss already.

You can see the list and view the images from here: Early Manuscripts at Oxford University.

The Lully,Lully... thread has links to the mss containing Lully, Lully... and The Agincourt Carol. And of course the (mostly) later broadside collection at the Bodleian has been invaluable. (However I still regret that the UK has nothing like the Levy collection or the various sheet music collections at several US universities; finding British sheet music copies is not so easy as finding US issues).

Still it's good news that the Bodleian is digitizing more stuff.

Forgot to add the British library has also digitized some of its mss: British Library - Digitized Manuscripts. You can search for something particular or browse them from that page.

I was aware a lot of it is already digitized. Same thing at the university library where I work. But it looks like a lot more will be digitized because there is another grant for the work.

I was searching for a piece of sheet music at the Bodleian a few weeks back, I read a request in Mudcat and as a challenge I set myself to see if I could reach it. I got *that* close before the search said I had to be in the building to see the item. Maybe now some of those items will be digitized as well.

SRS - Doesn't look likely. According to the article it's going to be Greek mss, 15thC books, Hebrew mss and early printed books. I think it may be a while before we'll be able to see sheet music there!

Yes, they listed the charismatic stuff. But perhaps that list isn't exhaustive. (Clinging to threads. . . )

If you're interested in Broadsides, the University of California at Santa Barbara have digitised the Roxburhge and Pepys collections of Broadsides held at Cambridge University among others.

I've used it a couple of times in the past. An excellent complement to the Bodleian Broadside collection.

I wish I could remember what that search was about. I posted the results on the Mudcat Cafe facebook page so I might be able to backtrack. It was an academic exercise, to see how close I could get to the document in question.
