15 Apr 12 - 10:04 AM (#3338620) Subject: BS: OK, now please help name MY puppy! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) I loved watching (mostly lurking) the process of the naming of Kat's beautiful new dog, A. Maizee Grace! Little did I suspect how soon I would need to call upon the Mudcat Hive Mind to help with the same situation. Next week we are getting a companion dog for our beautiful potcake, Nellie (shown here with my beautiful daughter, Maggie!). Meet the puppy currently called "Bonita"! She is a Bahamian potcake pup, who will be coming to me next Sunday (Earth Day!). Here she is again. You can learn more about potcake pups at Potcake Place . Here are some name requirements: -No more than 2 syllables. -Sounds different enough from "Nellie" that they will be able to distinguish who is being summoned. - Can't be Maggie, another very common dog name. _Nellie is named after "Nellie Bly" and "My Darling Nellie Gray" which are both tunes used locally for years for contra and square dances. An added bonus is if the new pup's name has a musical connotation! -Not too "cute", not too "pop". -Names under consideration are "Emma", "Gaia" (because of Earth Day, but it's being vetoed as reeking too much of patchouli!). Any suggestions, o wise friends? |

15 Apr 12 - 07:12 PM (#3338836) Subject: RE: BS: OK, now please help name MY puppy! From: gnu 999.... Claret? I always was partial to one syllable names. Like "Dawg." That's what an old hand at dog breeding told me... one syllable. Odd... just this eve a neighbour with a new dog (9 weeks?) passed while I was on my evening walk. She let the small dog come toward me on the leash and it wanted to jump on me. I said "NO!" to the dog and she reined it in. She said, "Oh. He can't hurt you." I said that no dog should be allowed to jump up and that I could train the dog not to do so in less than an hour if she wanted me to do so. She went on and on about how good the pup was and how she knew how to train a dog. I said, well, that's a good thing because now you can train it not to jump up on people. Next time we meet, I look forward to making friends with your dog but if it jumps up on me I'll slap it. She was not impressed. Then again, she's not much smarter than the dog. I find it odd that SO many people have NO idea how to train a dog but THINK that they know how to do it. I think it is worthy of considerstion that anyone who wants to get a dog should have to take a course on training and caring for a dog. No need for any fees... I am sure the likes of the SPCA could find volunteers to provide this service... a service for the dogs. |

17 Apr 12 - 05:43 PM (#3339720) Subject: RE: BS: OK, now please help name MY puppy! From: Richard Bridge I don't see what's wrong with "Bonita". We rescued a cross-breed called "Benji" which was much to close to our existing "Bonnie" (the small Dane) so we named him "Benjamin" and it worked just fine. But if you MUST - "Yellow" after Yellowman the reggae singer. It falls to the end of the name while Nellie rises so there should be no confusion. |

Regardless what the dog's name ends up being, that is one cute AND intelligent dog. Just plain looks smart.
