Tech: ZX Spectrum 30 years old

Today's Google homepage had a rainbow on it's picture of St.George and Dragon. If you clicked on the picture it brought up links to the 30th anniversary of the release of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer.

I've still got mine in a box somewhere. Must get it out and have a play...

Quack!

I have one somewhere as well! Marvellous in its day - taught myself Basic (and BASIC) programming on one of those things.

I started with the ZX80, small white one, then moved onto the 81 and then the Spectrum. Still have all three.

Still got my ZX81 (why didn't we have an anniversary last year?) and its HUGE 16K memory module. Hasn't worked for a good many years. My Lynx (look it up) works perfectly well, except for the '3' key. My laptop is fair-to-rubbish; it's only(!) got 1/2MB of RAM and the C drive is over 80% full -- of what, I've no idea ... Time to get a Mac!

I bought a kit, either an 80 or an 81 I don't remember which. It cost less that $100 and I eventually passed it on to a nephew.

For the money it was a great little machine with a brilliant version of BASIC which was context driven so it didn't have any forbidden keywords. It was very slow though.

There is a site where you can play Spectrum games, if nostalgia takes you. - www.zxspectrum.net.

We still have ours, a tape recorder to load the programs with, a joystick and a box of games all working fine.
Trouble is...

is it worth keeping?
