Does anyone have the music or tab for A maid in bedlam? As far as i can tell its an old English folk song. I've been looking for it for quite a while. The words are in the mudcat data base, but no music. Does anyone have an idea where i can find it?

I sing a version of this song which I learned from a Cecil Sharp collection. I don't know if its the same tune though the first verse and chorus are the same. I just don't have any software for posting tunes. I'll investigate though.

It's from about 1775-80, and the tune was "Will you go to Flanders" or "Gramachree Molly (Ashtore)", and is one of three songs to the tune in 'The Scots Musical Museum'. The "Flanders" song and tune are in DT.

One of the most known versions, at least in europe,was done by ``The John Renbourn Group´´.
They gave out a LP. with the title ``A Maid in Bedlam´´
Trans.348 in 1977.
More recently the Norwegian duo ``Cameo´´(Marit Jordbræk and Kari Bjerke Karlsen),have done an excellent version on their latest CD. released earlier this year and called KEEPSAKE.
As far as TAB goes I'm not sure where you could get that.

I hunted down one of the few Steeleye Span Songbooks at the library of Congress several years ago and am pretty sure I copied the music for their version of Bedlam Boys. Is this the song you are looking for? If so, If you send me a private message with your fax number I can fax it to you.

Oops!

A Maid in Bedlam is not the same as Bedlam Boys. Both are in the DT. My offer still stands for Bedlam Boys. Good luck in you search for the Maid.

Ahoy, pawpecked. Ever heard of Owain Phyfe and the New World Renaissance Band?

They do a great version of this on their "Where Beauty Moves and Wit Delights" CD. BRRR!!! I get chill just thinking about it.

Yes, yes ... hear some 3 till 4 versions of that song from diffrent artists, but no version is so good and really chilling as Owain's. Hmmm I sounds like mad fan, but it's really good to hear it for inspiration. Btw I have some version in old edition of Canow Kernow. Which is great source for cornish songs. There is written that it's accient cornish song for which lyrics was forgotten so there was written new in 18c. (I hope I remember well :-) It's one of my favorite songs with so great melody (but not easy to sing well) that's was only song for which I was jealusy that I kept it for myself to sing, although I share most of my sheet music and sources with friends. This is my precious .... my .... my ... (Have I heard it somwhere...? :-))))))
