Roger's Rant Dorset UK 2012

04 May 12 - 05:00 PM (#3346945)
Subject: Roger's Rant Dorset UK 2012
From: Herga Kitty

Friday 29th June to Sunday 1 July, Roger's Rant is a fun weekend of folk music that we are running in the beautiful Dorset countryside in aid of charity.

This will be a celebration of traditional & contemporary folk music, song and dance at Milborne St Andrew DT11 0JA. There will be some of the best of the local amateur singers and musicians, as well as some from further afield. There is also the opportunity for aspiring singers and musicians to have a go in a friendly atmosphere at the Sports Club. Info about this year's event and pictures of previous years on Facebook, here.

Money raised will go to Julia's House Hospice and The Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.

Hope to see and hear some Catters!

Kitty

Just in case the name puts anyone off - Roger has never been known to rant. he is a gentle soul.

Indeed he is, Al, but he likes a bit of alliteration...

Well I daresy we've all like filthy sexual practices that are best kept quiet. I suppose there's a bit of DH Lawrence in him - the beards a clue.

I should have said in my original post that there is no charge for attending - and camping (with use of showers and toilets) is just £10 per person for the weekend!

Alas, the Fates have conspired against us and it's very unlikely that we'll be able to come along *grumble* Another year hopefully.

Have fun you lot!!

Rob and I will be there, for the first time. I guess that makes us Rant Virgins :)

Any likelihood of a Mudgather? I noticed that MGAS can't make it :(

Jenny

It's small, intimate festival, and the programme for the singing venue is pretty full - I'm happy to collect names of Catters at the singarounds but I'm not sure whether there's space in the pub for a dedicated Mudgather... See you both on Friday!

Kitty
xx

PS Any volunteers for collecting names in the pub?

Paul is facilitating a song swap workshop on Saturday morning, 10-12, with contributions from Lucy Burrow and Dave and Ann Reader. After that, I think he'll be playing in the music session in the pub for a while....

A song workshop does not sit comfortably as a solo effort, since I cannot think there is a definitive right or wrong way to write songs!. Having the input of four writers (as a starting point) is a great way forward. If nothing else, should no-one else turn up, at least there will be four of us!

Thanks to Roger, Alice, Gilly, Tony and everyone who made a wonderful weekend - especially to those who stayed to take down the marquee this morning (hope you didn't get too wet)!

I clocked the following Mudcatters, partners and occasional guests who post - all of whom performed at the singarounds:

Herga Kitty + Horologist
Hawker + Mr Hawker
Quantock
JennyO
Mr&Mrs Scarecrow
Sunray FC
Wuzzle & Mr Wuzzle
Wild Flying Dove
No Fixed Abode (Tony & Una)
Broadsideman
Morticia + Idris
Big Al Whittle
Les Sullivan
Paul Openshaw

OK, so who did I miss (running hare....?)?

Sorry I would have been round there sooner, but peoples cars kept breaking down.

Lots of fun last night though.

Can the bloke who came up to me and asked for advice - get in contact with me? Him and his wife were in the caravan with Shirley as we arrived.

If he comes and visits me - I'll sort his guitar out for him. Sorry I was a bit preoccupied last night getting Denise out of the building.

Hi Kitty,

What about the Wareham Wailers and their French friends? Their session in the sports club on Sunday afternoon was incredible. A definite weekend highlight, even for those of a "non shanty" disposition.

I have to admit I am a words man....

Normally I don't understand what the shanty man is singing about, and when done in French I have even less idea. But the voices and passion were admirable. And excellent musicians too.

I would hope in the future more is made of the potential!

A lovely mix!

A very big thanks to Derek and Kitty for all their hard work at the Rant this year the organizing, M C' ing concerts and sings. Thank you to Paul for the song forum, and to all the wonderful guests that came and sang for us who were as ever brilliant and beautiful, Thank you to Chris Hall and the Dorset Buttons Ceilidh band for giving up their time to make the Barn Dance such a wonderful evening. So many people have told us how much it was enjoyed. Forgive me for quoting Paul's message that the Sunday afternoon shanty singing was 'stunning' but I have add my thoughts to say it was absolutely brilliant due to the Wareham Whalers and their delightful guests from France. So a big thank you to all as well.
Thanks Mervyn for the Puddle walking, to the caterer's thank you……:0) thank you Susan and Martin for running the bar
To everyone involved in any way big or small thank you finally many thanks to Roger and Alice for starting the whole rant thing off in the first place. We live in hope that government will one day bring in more funding for all these good works and charities but until then lives have been changed by fund raising.             Thank you

Paul - I was only posting the names of Catters I'd spotted, because I undertook to do so in an earlier post... I'm glad that you and others have flagged up your highlights from the weekend. (Of course, for me they included your worm farm!)

This was the first time Rob and I have been to this, and we'll be back! We loved it! There was something for everyone. As well as all the singing, we enjoyed the music session in the pub on Saturday afternoon, and the concert up in the church on Sunday.

I also put another face to a Mudcat name - Big Al Whittle. Nice to meet you, Al, and enjoyed your music - shame you couldn't be there for longer.

It was great to be in such a relaxed atmosphere amongst friends. We felt very well fed, thanks to the two dinner ladies who are 'stars' in their own right. Thank you to everybody who made this brilliant weekend happen!

We were Rant Virgins too, and really enjoyed the lovely atmosphere and great singing, music and dance. The french singers made it special too, I think we too will be back for more. Thanks to all who worked so very hard to make it the great weekend it was.
Cheers, Lucy & Kevin x
